We are so proud of this story and excited to now offer this to our clients. Please enjoy highlights and a few words from Dr. Taylor in regards to the first in-house TPLO surgery.
"Asia presented to us this summer with chronic pain due to severe osteoarthritis from bilateral tears of her cranial cruciate ligaments. If you remember back to our post waaaaay back in February, I was training to learn a procedure called a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy. (TPLO). This has been the favored procedure to fix a ruptured Cranial Cruciate Ligament (Very similar to an ACL in people). After months of continued training, Asia's family volunteered to be my first patient. We have included some photos and videos while she was with us, as well as a 2 week post-op. We are planning to repair her other side soon, and her family is already reporting her increased energy, improved quality of life, and decreased pain. I am so pleased with her progress and can't wait to see her return to full function in the coming months." - Tom

I hope the kindness and good deeds of some people can somehow outweigh the callousness of others.
I was at the wildlife hospital until after 8:00 pm last night waiting for a small young woman and her daughter to transport a large badly injured young bald eagle to the IRC. The three year old bird was eating roadkill when it was struck and left on the road by a vehicle near Monmouth IL. (See rescuer’s picture below)
It is rare to get in a bird with two broken wings.
I moved the bird to a steel caging unit and gave it a large dose of pain killer. It is doubtful the bird can be saved but I wanted it comfortable for the night.
It has been one sleepless night as I couldn’t stop thinking about the bird.
This is a sad situation with little chance of a story book ending. But it needs to be told.
If you hit a wild animal be kind. Dont leave it to suffer. Don’t cause harm to yourself or others but try to get the animal help. It must be horrible to lay in the road waiting for the next vehicle to inflict another blow until your body has finally been ground into the pavement.
It is getting colder and animals are moving about more than usual. Watch the sides of the road more closely. Don’t speed.
GIVE WILDLIFE A BRAKE!
As Tech Week comes to a close, we wanted to share a few more tips with you. Please enjoy the weekend and once again, thank you to our amazing techs and assistants for all you do.
We had our own Joyfully Jefferson in this week. My he has certainly grown!!!

#NationalChocolateDay 🍫 is one of the sweetest days of the year for humans. For your pet (especially your dog), it can be one of the most dangerous.
Chocolate toxicity is one of the most commonly treated toxicities in dogs, especially during the upcoming holiday season. Here's a look at which types of chocolate are the most toxic. Remember, if you think your pet may have gotten into some chocolate (of any kind), it's best to contact your veterinarian immediately.
To our wonderful clients and friends here at Den Herder Veterinary Hospital: We have made the tough decision to go with curbside service again.
Personally, I have tried to take a very objective, scientific, approach to the COVID situation. I don't allow politicians or emotions to tell me what to believe, we have tried to base our decisions on science and practicality. In a nutshell, our numbers are climbing locally (science), and we can still provide the same care to our patients while our clients talk with us from their car (practicality).
Frankly, I hate the virtual, impersonal world we are being forced to live in. It creates more stress on our staff, and more frustration from our clients that want to be in the room, but it’s a compromise that worked well for us at the beginning of the summer, and should work well this fall and winter.
With rising numbers and aggressive contact tracing, there is just too much downside for us to have extra people in the building.
We would be happy to accommodate anyone that wants to be on a video chat during the exam, and we will be allowing clients into the building in certain situations, like end of life moments, or complicated medical cases that require an in depth conversation.
We thank you so much for your ongoing support and trust in us. And remember, those -10° days are looming and you will be able to stay in the comfort of your warm car while we run in and out for you!
Take care and zoom you soon!

Thank you Rachel for sharing a video of how Elliott spends his Iowa winters.
His room is kept in the high 70's and he has a basking area of 100 degrees. There is a humidity and temperature sensor in his room to monitor the levels at all times. The floors have been sealed to provide traction and make cleanup easier. His room light is on a sunrise and sunset dimmer to help keep his natural day/night cycle. The hide house was built by her dad and he sleeps in it every night.
He is eating opuntia cactus pads, which are a great option for sulcatas and other grassland tortoises as they are high in calcium and fiber. He also has access to Mazuri tortoise pellets and timothy hay pellets. She supplements with a variety of dark, leafy greens from the store, but does not use them as his main diet.

Smile! February is National Pet Dental Health Month. Stay tuned for helpful tips and tricks to keep those pet smiles bright and healthy.
Please take a moment to flip through these important reminders.
It's dental month! Don't you wish there was some way to know if the treats you got your dog helps with plaque and tartar control? There is!
Just look for dental chews with the Veterinary Oral Health Committee seal of approval! These have been verified to reduce tartar and plaque in pets. For a list of these products visit VOHC.org.
Always remember - dental chews tend to be rather small - so make sure they are given under supervision.
They are also not a replacement for daily brushing, but a great option and treat for our furry friends!

Hey All!
It’s been a year since our world changed due to the pandemic. It’s safe to say, none of us saw it coming and we are all glad to see it leave.
We will be remaining curbside for just a few more weeks until our staff can get their vaccines. We have a few team members that we are trying to continue to protect due to unique health concerns personally, or with close relatives.
As most of you know, the office has been very busy. We are so grateful that you have all continued to trust us in our care and policies. We know from experience that if we lose even 1 team member to quarantine, it affects our ability to offer our best service and care. We have tried incredibly hard to protect that, and greatly appreciate your patience.
We can’t wait to see your smiling faces again, soon!!
Tom and Mandy Taylor
Date Night! Mandy and I try really hard to always make time for each other (without kids) once a week. We have a running joke in our house that it wouldn't be a true date without a quick stop at the office to check on a patient or two.
Friday night's third wheel this week? Cheyenne! We were so happy to see her smiling face just hours after recovering from her knee surgery. Her smile is just one of the many "why's" that we do what we do.
Tom
Spring is in the air! Now that everyone’s starting to come out of hibernation (including pesky critters) it’s important to know what to do in the unfortunate event your pet accidentally gets into rodenticide. First, get your pet into a safe area so that they can no longer have access to the bait. Next, check the time that your pet ate the bait, and snap a photograph of the bait they ingested and the container. Most importantly, call your veterinarian as soon as possible. We will want to know how much your pet weighs, when they ingested the poison, and what type of poison they ingested (hence the photos you took to remember!). Unfortunately, knowing the color of the poison alone is not always helpful - a lot of rodenticides are green but work in different ways. Luckily, most cases that are caught early enough are readily treated! If for any reason you cannot reach us quickly, you can also call the pet poison hotline at 855-765-7661.
