Leading the News Advertisement Advertisement Permanent Damage May Occur With DIY Dentistry, ADA Says Noting the latest do-it-yourself (DIY) dentistry trend involves TikTok users filing teeth down with nail files, Medical Daily (9/29, Durning ) discusses the risks involved with this and other DIY dentistry trends and products. Medical Daily also reached out to the American Dental Association on the topic. “Some DIY health trends on social media, like the current trend of filing your own teeth, can cause permanent damage,” the ADA wrote in an email. “That’s why it’s so important to talk to your dentist about concerns you may have with your teeth, rather than trying out DIY treatments. Dentists examine each patient and provide customized treatments that help treat the root of the problem.” The article adds that for those who “need to see a dentist and are short on funds,” lower-cost options are available, including seeking care at a dental school. Dentists can refer patients to MouthHealthy.org, ADA’s consumer website, for additional information on DIY dental treatments. FROM THE ADA Catch up on COVID-19 digital events Missed one of the ADA’s recent webinars on topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic? It’s not too late! Check out the COVID-19 Digital Events page for recordings of past events, updated regularly. Recent additions include: Regulatory Compliance During COVID-19. Managing COVID-Related Leave in the Dental Office. Practicing After COVID. Connect with ADA: Visit ADA News Legislative News Pelosi, Meadows Hopeful About Latest Negotiations On COVID-19 Stimulus Package The Washington Post (9/29, Werner ) reports that on Tuesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said “they’re hopeful they can reach a new economic stimulus agreement, a fresh burst of optimism one day after House Democrats unveiled a new bill and stalled talks resumed.” Pelosi “told reporters at the Capitol an agreement could come this week, which is supposed to be Congress’s final one in session before recessing through the election.” ADA in the News Advertisement Advertisement ADA Well-Positioned To Foster Interoperability The ADA News (9/29, Burger) reports, “The ADA is well-positioned to be a leader in advancing interoperability on the heels of federal regulations published earlier this year, according to the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics.” Two rules “implement interoperability and patient access provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act.” Passed by Congress in 2016, the act “encourages electronic information exchange between providers, payers, consumers and others for the sake of improving care, reducing costs and empowering consumers.” Dr. Gregory Zeller, past chair of the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Informatics and current chair of the committee’s subcommittee on clinical informatics, said, “These rules do not have much immediate impact on dentistry, but dentistry and its leaders are thinking ahead to the time when regulators, consumers and payers begin pressuring them to adopt newer, more interoperable technologies that support information exchange.” Tips To Address “Bad Mask Breath” In a consumer-focused article, LiveStrong (9/29, Levine) outlines several ways to help alleviate “bad mask breath,” such as maintaining proper oral hygiene, dealing with dry mouth, and cleaning masks frequently. The article also says “foods such as garlic and onions can cause foul breath because, even once they’re digested, the chemicals that cause their odor are absorbed into your bloodstream and from there into your lungs, where they are exhaled, according to the American Dental Association.” Dentists can refer patients to MouthHealthy.org, ADA’s consumer website, for information on bad breath causes and solutions. The ADA provides a complete list of toothpastes with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, including some with bad breath control attributes. In addition, ClōSYS Alcohol-Free Oral Health Rinse (unflavored & gentle mint) and TheraBreath Fresh Breath Oral Rinse (mild mint, invigorating icy mint, rainforest mint) have earned the ADA Seal for helping to reduce bad breath. Advertisement Advertisement Health and Safety Meta-Analysis Finds Bidirectional Association Between Type 2 Diabetes, Sleep Apnea Healio (9/28, Monostra ) reported, “Not only is obstructive sleep apnea an independent risk factor for type 2 diabetes – with stronger associations as apnea severity increases – but diabetes is a risk factor for sleep apnea,” investigators concluded in a meta-analysis that “analyzed data from 16 articles of 19 cohort studies” published through January. The findings were presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes virtual meeting. Dental professionals can visit ADA.org for information and resources on obstructive sleep apnea. Dentists can refer patients to MouthHealthy.org, ADA’s consumer website, for information about sleep apnea. The ADA Catalog also offers the brochure Do You Have Sleep Apnea? Talk to your dentist about snoring. This move follows concerns from borrowers and banks that the process has been taking too long. Georgia Clinic To Pay $1.5M To Settle Potential HIPAA-Compliance Violations The ADA News (9/29) reports, “Athens Orthopedic Clinic will pay $1.5 million to the Office for Civil Rights and adopt a corrective action plan to settle potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy and Security Rules, according to an OCR news release.” The settlement comes after a hacker gained access to the clinic’s “electronic medical record system and patient health data,” which affected 208,557 individuals. The release said OCR’s investigation into the incident discovered “longstanding, systemic” noncompliance with the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. The article reports that other “must haves” included “dental coverage (69%), vision coverage (41%), and disability (41%) coverage.” Enrollment Increases In Medicaid Programs Amid COVID-19 Pandemic The AP (9/29) reports that the COVID-19 “pandemic has caused a national increase in the number of people enrolling in the federal Medicaid health payment program and officials have said Alaska residents are joining at unprecedented levels.” Data show that during “the last six months, more than 12,000 people in Alaska have joined Medicaid, known in the state as DenaliCare and Denali KidCare.” The state’s Medicaid “program covered 232,735 participants as of Aug. 31, or nearly one out of three...residents, including most children.” In addition, MLive (MI) (9/29, Hicks ) reports that about “800,000 Michiganders have enrolled in Michigan’s expanded Medicaid program.” Data show the “Healthy Michigan Plan had almost 682,000 enrollees in late March at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic,” and “as COVID-19 has affected Michiganders’ finances and health, enrollment has grown to a record 800,794, or about 8% of residents, according to a Tuesday, Sept. 29 announcement from the Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office.” Additional COVID-19 News Some Private Insurers To Stop Fully Paying For Virtual Visits On Oct. 1 STAT (9/29, Robbins , Brodwin) reports on Oct. 1, some private insurers, including UnitedHealthcare and Anthem, “will no longer fully pay for virtual visits under certain circumstances.” The article states that “it’s not clear yet how much patients affected by the changes being implemented this week can expect to have to pay for telehealth visits, nor is it clear how those costs will compare to copays for an in-person visit.” Sponsored By: Advertisement Tuesday's Lead Stories • Dentists See Increase In Stress-Related Oral Health Conditions, HPI Poll Finds • CDHCs Help Boost HPV Vaccination Rates At New Jersey Health Center • NIH Grant To Fast Track Development Of New Nonopioid Medicine • Tips To Begin Using Pinterest • Nebraska’s Expanded Medicaid Program Begins Oct. 1 Advertisement Sponsored Content Webinar: Secrets To Get Patients In The Door, In Chairs And Build Relationship Loyalty In this free webinar, sponsored by Henry Schein One (7 p.m. on Oct. 13), you will learn how technology can assist your practice’s patient communication efforts to help busy patients remember their appointments while you build your online presence, create deeper patient loyalty and bring new patients to the practice. A definite “Thumbs up!” - by Rita G. I have 10 years of experience working in the dental industry. Because of this experience, I am always looking out for the things that matter to me when I go to a dental office for my dental treatments. I check for cleanliness of room, sterilization of dental instruments, and professionalism of the staff/doctors. All of these qualities I have found at Dental Images. They are very professional, very polite, and very knowledgeable. The presentation and cleanliness is top of the line. I highly recommend dental images for anyone seeking a dental clinic with great customer services. Thank you to my hygienist for being so gentle and yet very thorough with my teeth cleaning. Dr. De La Paz.....thank you! Receptionist and staff you are awesome as well! 😁 See more of our patient reviews here: https://rwl.io/3d6jYof D1.PATIENTCONNECT365.COM Dental Images Patient Reviews
The only place for me - by Gwendolyn B. I had my first dental cleaning with Kym and I have only praise; absolutely no complaints. See you in six months 🤗 The rest of the story... I have been a patient at Dental Images for almost 22 years. Even when the Army moved us out of the area, I would fly back at my own expense so that I could get treated by Dr DeLaPa. I was terrified of dentist. He gained my trust and going to someone else was not an option. Doctor Dee and his staff are AWESOME...many thanks to all of you!
