📸 Spotlight on Laura Meet Laura, who has recently joined our team as an Ophthalmic Technologist. We welcome her here all the way from the East Coast! She is a graduate of Temple University where she studied Cognitive Neuroscience and French Language. After working as a Research Assistant at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, she moved to California and joined our team at Desert Vision Center. Her favorite diagnostic test is the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). It is a non-invasive ophthalmic imaging test that is used to create ultra high resolution 3-D reconstructive maps of the eye. It relies on long wavelengths of light energy (near infrared) that allow measurements of the spatial measurements of structures such as the optic nerve, macula, and anterior segment.

🍁Today, on Thanksgiving, we celebrate our wonderful patients and employee team at Desert Vision Center. Through the challenges we face, and especially in 2020, it is the people around us whose lives we touch that make all the difference in the world. We are grateful for our patients and all those we serve. 🍁 Each day, we hope to make the world a better place, one patient at a time. ❤️ “Gratitude makes sense of our past, Brings peace for today, And creates a vision for tomorrow.” - Melody Beattie

And it is a good reminder to keep the eyes protected from the harmful rays of the sun. 🌞 #mauijim #alohaholidays Maui Jim
🌎 At Desert Vision Center, we believe we have a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment for our patients and team members. That is why we have made clean air a priority. 🌤 Our highly-sophisticated HVAC includes a state-of-the-art iWave air purification system that does not use potentially harmful UV rays like other air purifiers. Instead, it utilizes a needlepoint bi-polar ionization generator. As air flows past, positive and negative ions actively purify the air, killing mold, bacteria, and viruses. In light of the current COVID-19 climate, we continuously strive to go above and beyond to create the safest solutions possible, protecting our patients and team members. For more information about COVID-19 eye health, visit the American Academy of Ophthalmology website. Nu-Calgon Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce
🎄 Christmas Tree Cataract 🎄This is a rare type of cataract with spectacular glistening lights when viewed at a slit lamp and aptly called a “Christmas Tree Cataract.” 🎄 It can be associated with myotonic dystrophy, and some have postulated the crystals are induced by elevated calcium levels, cholesterol, or excess cystine concentration #ChristmasCataract
👁Glaucoma treatment without eye drops: Durysta Up until now, eye doctors have had only three general categories of treatment options for patients with glaucoma: 1) eye drops, 2) glaucoma laser, or 3) glaucoma surgery. This year, the FDA approved the use of Durysta. Now, we have a fourth modality of treatment: Implants! Commonly, medicated eye drops are used in the management of glaucoma. However, using eye drops for some patients can be problematic: medication intolerance due to (dry and ocular surface disease), difficulties with application of the eyedrops (e.g. due to arthritis), high monthly pharmacy co-payments, or trouble remembering to use the medication daily. Durysta (bimatoprost) is a medicated dissolvable eye implant that slowly releases the therapeutic dose of glaucoma medication into the eye over the course of many months. The procedure is quick and painlessly performed in the office In these photos taken directly after implantation by Dr. Tokuhara, the Durysta Implant is visible by gonioscopy in the inferior angle. #durysta Allergan
💫⭐️To all those who gaze into the sky and make a wish... Persistent Fetal Iris Remnant ⭐️These are the most common developmental abnormality of the Iris. During the sixth month of gestation, the tunica vasculosa lentis involutes. Rarely, there is incomplete regression of tissue and Iris strands are left behind. In general, persistent iris pupillary membranes are rarely of any visual consequence unless they either encroach into the center visual axis or adhere to the anterior lens capsule to induce a visually significant anterior polar cataract. #shootingstar #persistentpupillarymembrane #palmsprings #dvc2020 #ranchomirage
❄️Happy Holidays from Desert Vision Center! ❄️ Our office is closed and we will reopen on January 4, 2021. For any urgent matters, please call our answering service at 760-340-4700. #DVC2020
Why did this patient have glare after cataract surgery? Why is the pupil shape irregular? Why did the Iris color change after cataract surgery? Dr. Tokuhara discusses iris damage after cataract surgery performed by another surgeon, and how he corrects it. In this video, a case example of a patient who had cataract surgery two years ago by an outside surgeon came to Dr. Tokuhara for a second opinion consultation. How is this fixed? Complications from cataract surgery are not the norm. Fortunately, many complications, such as iris damage, can be remedied. Dr. Tokuhara specializes in complex cataract surgery and anterior segment repair. He has a private cataract surgery practice in Rancho Mirage, California. https://youtu.be/B8sM9Xa5mus #cataract #ophthalmology #ophthalmologist #cataractsurgery #irisdamage YOUTUBE.COM 'Botched' Cataract Surgery Edition: Iris Damage Repair

Can you guess the diagnosis? Comment Below Michael joins our DVC team as an ophthalmic technologist. Here he demonstrates the use of OCT. Michael has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from the California State University of San Bernardino. He was heavily involved in laboratory research at CSUSB and later worked at the Loma Linda University Health International Heart Institute before joining Desert Vision Center. The Heidelberg OCT is a powerful tool used to evaluate optic nerve and macular pathology. CSUSB
🍀Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Desert Vision Center! 🍀 Wearing green was once thought to make those wearing it invisible to leprechauns. The mischievous little people would pinch anyone that they could see (i.e. anyone not wearing green). 🟢 In reality, the color green, specifically light with a wavelength of 555 nm, is one of the easiest colors for the human eye to see during daylight conditions.
