This week, many Americans are mourning the loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who recently passed away due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Justice Ginsburg will be remembered as a trailblazer on the high court, and for courageously battling this disease.
This year alone, the American Cancer Society estimates 57,600 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the U.S. As with all cancers, early detection is key along with knowing the signs, symptoms and risk factors.

Dignity Health in Arizona and YRMC share a special piece of history dating back to a time before Arizona was even a state. In the 1890s, the Sisters of Mercy not only opened the first hospital in Phoenix - our own Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center - they also founded the very first hospital in Prescott! While the health care landscapes have drastically grown over time in both areas, the commitment to creating healthier communities has not wavered. Meet JD DeHarty – an emergency department nurse at Arizona General Hospital facilities. This husband and father-of-two is one of the front line health care workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. JD says he got vaccinated to protect himself and his family. It also allows him to continue his calling: “The COVID-19 vaccine gives me a greater opportunity to keep providing medical care to people throughout the pandemic.”

There’s been many recent news headlines surrounding new and emerging COVID-19 variants. While there is still much to learn about mutations of the virus, strong evidence suggests that some variants are more contagious. MAJOR MILESTONE: Today, Dignity Health in Arizona administered its 100,000th dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at Maricopa County’s Southeast Valley vaccination POD! Kerry Gerle, the patient who received this dose, was surprised with balloons and confetti upon arriving to be vaccinated. To date, Dignity Health has administered 13% percent of the total number of COVID-19 vaccines given in Arizona and 21% percent given in Maricopa County. Today’s milestone brings us one step closer to controlling COVID-19. We are proud to be part of this historic vaccine roll-out!
CHECK IT OUT! A Dignity Health nurse in Arizona, Haley Bowser, received the surprise of a lifetime from the Arizona Cardinals and CBS Sports. Haley was one of a few essential workers honored by professional football players leading up the Super Bowl LV. A lifelong Cardinals fan, Haley was surprised by one of her superstars – All-Pro safety Budda Baker – in a special virtual call where he expressed his appreciation for her and all the dedicated frontline workers making a difference amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Heather James was awarded the 2020 Beth McDonald Woman of the Year Award! She received $7,500 from Shea Homes and a pair of beautiful diamond earrings from ED Marshall Jewelers !
Heather is an incredible mother, wife and front line worker. Since the pandemic she has been working tirelessly with Dignity Health as the Director of Nursing and Quality Assurance for Arizona and Nevada, testing front line workers and the public for the Coronavirus. She has never had chance to rest and never took a break from the extremely important work she does with Dignity or the travel that her position requires.
