The District of Columbia Property Insurance Facility provides Dwelling and Commercial Property coverages to individuals and businesses of the District of Columbia who are unable to obtain coverage through the voluntary insurance market. We strive to:
Make sure basic property insurance is available for all qualified properties.
Assure stability in the property insurance market
Provide for the equitable distribution of risk to all licensed insurers
It is the purpose of this Facility to provide for the administration of an industry placement facility pursuant to the provisions of Title 31, Subtitle VII, Chapter 50 Insurance Placement of the District of Columbia Code .
The District of Columbia Property Insurance Facility is established under provisions of the District of Columbia Code. The facility is not a government agency or organization.
The District of Columbia Property Insurance Facility is comprised of all voluntary market insurance companies which are licensed and writing basic property insurance, homeowners insurance and property insurance components of multi-peril policies in the District Of Columbia. The facility is regulated by the Department of Insurance and Securities Regulation of The District of Columbia.
The District of Columbia Property Insurance Facility does not have a rating by any financial rating organization, such as A.M. Best Company, due to our being a F.A.I.R. Plan. The law requires that all insurers licensed to write property insurance in the District of Columbia become a member of the Facility.
Each member of the Facility shall participate in the expenses, profits and losses of the Facility in the proportion that its premiums written bear to the aggregate premiums written by all members of the Facility. The Board of Directors of the Facility has the authority to assess the membership when such action is deemed necessary.
