Early winter warning :) now is the time to get prepared for winter. By November it will be on. We have couple of recommendations if you are new to the area.
Start looking for a plow service now. residential plowing fills up fast. find your local groups on facebook this can be a good way to find a plower. also talk to your neighbors. sometimes plow people can be a little less expensive if they do multiple driveways in a given area.
If you are the hands on type pick up a snow blower especially if you have a long driveway. If you use a snowblower stay on top of the snow every 3 or 4" blow it otherwise the blower will bog down. We recommend 10 hp here in the foot hills
4x4, all wheel drive or front wheel drive make no matter. Tires are everything. Just because you see a tread pattern still does not mean your tire will work in the snow. See one of the many local shops to have them check your tires or stop by and see us and we will.
If you live on a steep driveway find a place to park near the bottom if you don't have removal set up. many people think when they cant get up their driveway the tow truck can take care of it. Because of the weight and size of trucks we can have more difficulty managing an un-plowed driveway then you do and may not be able to get to your car until the driveway is plowed. Also it is not always good for your car to have a tow truck winch it out. so park near the road if there is any question you may not get out.
if you commute to the city for work talk to the locals about best routes. Side roads used to be great but since Google came along it now sends heavy traffic to the side roads making them worse then the highways. Additionally not all side roads are plowed and sanded right away.
Keep essentials in your car. candle, blanket, jumper cables, protein bar.
Finally stay off the brakes. when driving in icy conditions pick a slow comfortable speed and stay off the brakes. hard braking causes wheels to lock up and stops the ability for your car to change directions. if you start sliding steer through it without brakes. You will have a much better chance of just steering then using the brakes. Most of the incidents we see are over braking or going to fast.
