Animal emergency rooms, across the country, are experiencing anywhere from a 25 - 50% increase in patients due to the coronavirus pandemic. What does this mean for clients? Unfortunately, this results in a much longer wait time.
Please know that we have and will continue to hire staff to help handle the increase but that isn't enough to combat all the factors we're dealing with. We thank you advance for your patience and promise that we're committed to providing each and every pet the individualized, quality-care they deserve.
During this time, we ask you look up your current vet's hours of operation so you don't learn they are closed during an emergency when time is of the essence. The other is to keep an eye on your pet's activities. What may look like a not-so-serious condition in your pet, can really change over the course of 24 to 48 hours.
Please help us congratulate Abbey on completing her chemotherapy ❤️🐾🐶🎉
Help us welcome three new team members to our ER Department., Kimberly and Kayla join as veterinary technicians and Gail will be an ER technician supervisor. They are ready to pour lots of love into your furbabies. 😁🎉❤
Just in case the world didn’t know...
Thank you Trapp family for the delicious cookies and for showing our staff lots of ❤️.
October is American Humane’s Adopt-A-dog Month.
Approximately 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year. If you’re looking to add a member to your family, consider adopting a dog that’s looking for a loving home.
Special shout-out to the team members at our hospital who continuously open their hearts to adopting/rescuing dogs in need of a loving home.
What is your pet’s favorite toy?
October is a great time to revisit your safety measures to ensure your pet is protected during an emergency.

It is National Veterinary Technician Week and we are so grateful to have #amazing techs on our team.
Meet vet tech Nicole. She has been a vet tech for six years and joined our ER team in June 2019. Nicole was drawn to the veterinary world by her passion to help animals daily who are in need. One of the most rewarding parts of the job for her is earning an animal's trust and then watching as they make a full recovery.
From our family to yours, thank you to all the unsung heroes of the veterinary clinic for all that you do each and every day for our team, our clients, and their pets.
To all the wonderful vet techs out there - keep being awesome and doing all that you do!
#vettechweek
Every day, but in particular this week, we honor veterinary technicians and their commitment to providing individualized, quality care to dogs and cats at our hospital.
To show our appreciation, we recently added an art installation to remind them daily that they're heroes.
Please join us in celebrating these important team members by commenting your appreciation below!
To kick off VET TECH WEEK, we created a video to showcase a vet tech’s daily life. Their role extends well beyond what is taught in school or is evident on paper, and the world should know how incredibly compassionate, caring, selfless, and kind individuals each and every one of them are.
Thank you to all the unsung heroes of the veterinary clinic. #vettechweek2020
We are all preparing to fall in love with Landon ❤️😍🤗
Just in case no one told you today...YOU ARE AMAZING.
Happy 🐫 Day!!!
To say that these hard-working professionals excel at multi-tasking is an understatement.
Happy #vettechweek to the unsung heroes who act as a nurse, surgical assistant, anesthetist, x-ray technician, grief counselor, and also wears about a dozen more hats.

Our staff runs on coffee. Some prefer Starbucks and others prefer Dunkin. Which is your go to and what is your drink of choice?
We are excited to announce Dr. Paige Roberts has joined our ER Department.
Dr. Roberts was born and raised in Kentucky where she first started working in the veterinary field as a kennel technician. She continued to work in various capacities of the veterinary field during and after completing her undergraduate studies at Kenyon College in Ohio before deciding to go to vet school. Since graduating from Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015, she has worked in both ER and General Practice in West Virginia, D.C, and Maryland.
Dr. Roberts is excited to join the DCVR team as a full-time ER clinician. When she's not at work, Dr. Roberts enjoys traveling in her pop-up camper, hiking, tending to her multitude of house plants and spending time with her three dogs (Muffin, Archie, and Quinley) and three cats (Beaker, Darwin, and Rho).
These two cuties were neck and neck in our Pet Costume Contest.
Ms. Lady Bug aka Stella is the winner with 36 votes and Dumbo aka Darcy is the runner up with 33.

DCVR is partnering up with Bliss Nutrition, a local juice bar, to help collect donations to help send complete holiday dinners to local families in need.
How can you help? We are collecting canned and dry goods at our hospital from 11/13 - 11/23. There will be a table located outside our hospital's front doors that you can place your donations.

Meet Captain One Eyed Willy. He was rescued a couple months ago by Jessica Fields-Norris , one of our AMAZING Neurology Vet Techs.
As you can see, we were unable to save his right eye after a suspected infection went wild. However, his new family had his infected eye removed and brought him into their loving home. Luckily, with two dogs to watch his back and right side, Willy doesn’t seem to mind only having one eye. He is still able to explore the seas with his ship mates Katniss and fletcher.

We are excited we have made it over half our goal thanks to all the food donations we have received from staff and clients.
We are still collecting holiday canned goods, such as cranberry sauce or pumpkin purée, until 11/23 at our hospital. There is a table located outside the front doors that you can leave your items.
All donations will be delivered to BLISS Nutrition Laurel to turn into complete holiday meals for local families this Thanksgiving.
Meet Auggie. Auggie visited our hospital because he had a herniated disc causing his back legs to not work well.
Thanks to so many of the rescue groups we work with like Pets with Disabilities, Auggie was able to have back surgery and is starting to feel better.

We believe every pet deserves to live a pain-free life. However, we understand veterinary care can be quite costly and often delay pet parents from seeking medical treatment for their sick or injured furbabies. To help ensure all pets have the opportunity to receive the medical-care they deserve our hospital started a Care Fund to support families in need of emergency and/or specialty care for their pets.
The Care Fund enables community residents, just like you, to make financial contributions to help families cover the cost of their pet’s medical care. All donations are tax-deductible, and 100% of every dollar donated to our Care Fund is used to treat pets.

Meet our furry friend Otto (previously Rocky). Otto visited our hospital on 11/05 for diarrhea and lethargy. He was diagnosed with parvovirus and relinquished by his owners that night.
Dr. Blades, our Emergency and Critical Care specialist, took Otto into her care and reached out to family and friends to help find him a new loving home. Her mom, Pauline, stepped forward and adopted Otto on 11/08.
We're happy to report Otto is doing great and loves visiting our hospital staff and giving out lots of kisses. Join us as we sends lots of ❤️ to their family!!!

January is National Blood Donor Month and, yes, pets can donate too. As the pet population continues to grow, so does the number of pets who require blood transfusions. Our hospital relies on blood donations as a life-saving treatment for pets experiencing blood loss due to causes such as:
• Cancer
• Anemia
• Underlying clotting problems
• Internal bleeding from a motor vehicle accident

PSA: ER WAIT TIMES
Please note, Emergency Animal Hospitals across the country are experiencing regular wait times of 4-10 hours due to an increased need for walk-in care while local primary care and even other emergency hospitals are experiencing staff shortages and significantly reduced hours of operation. Coupled with an increase in new pet adoptions during the pandemic, we are experiencing caseloads that are double to triple the norm. We are working diligently to continue to accommodate this increased patient volume; however, we have finite physical space and we are often at full capacity.
The average wait is significantly higher for non-life-threatening cases including but not limited to:
1. Skin Conditions
2. Lameness
3. Sore Eyes/Ear Aches
4. Abscesses
5. Minor Wounds
6. Chronic Diseases
Please note, just like the triage process at human hospitals, your pet's medical care will be prioritized based on the severity of their symptoms.
We appreciate your patience while our staff is adapting to this new workflow!
Happy Friday from our family to yours. 🙃

February is #BlackHistoryMonth and we want to honor the stories of African Americans in Veterinary Medicine. Today we spotlight the founder of Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson.
Over the course of his 87 years, he influenced and generated a dynamic that pushed every organization he touched to its limit. In 1987, President Reagan honored Patterson with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Its inscription reads, “By his inspiring example of personal excellence and unselfish dedication, he has taught the nation that, in this land of freedom, no mind should go to waste…”.

February is #BlackHistoryMonth and we want to honor the stories of African Americans in Veterinary Medicine. Today we spotlight Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb and Dr. Jane Hinton, the first two African American women to earn veterinary degrees in 1949.
Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Webb taught biology and mathematics at North Carolina A&T College and then went on to teach anatomy and coordinate the laboratory animal science program at North Carolina State University.
Dr. Jane Hinton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and helped to develop the Mueller Hinton Agar, which is used in antibiotic susceptibility testing. It has become the standard medium for the Bauer Kirby method.

Thanks Pauline Blades for this adorable photo of your furbabies.
We are excited to welcome Alanna, Nina, and Vince to the DCVR team. 🤩 They are excited and ready to provide your furry family member/s with the individualized, quality care they deserve.
Need a Wednesday pick-me-up? Aaron and Dr. Bonistalli got you covered.
Due to the increased demand on our Emergency Department, and our extended wait times, DCVR will be implementing online/mobile check-in for all ER services. This check-in and registration method will allow our hospital to ensure that our patients needing the most urgent care are prioritized first and that our clients and patients with less critical needs can wait in the comfort of their homes, rather than in cars or in our hospital.
As always, we will strive to keep you updated on wait times and will continue to provide communication to clients with pets in our care through phone calls and new one-way texting capabilities.

We love and celebrate that our team is committed to adopting pets in need of loving homes. Bishop, along with all our staff pets, helps fill up our hospital with joy!!!

Meet our furry friend Mr. Prince Seabastian of Whales. Mr. Seabastian was rescued by Kim, one of our AMAZING ER Tech Supervisors.
In December 2018, he underwent surgery for his left ear to perform a TECA (total ear canal ablation) due to a long history of ear infections that were extremely painful and unmanageable with treatment. In June 2020, his right ear suffered from the same symptoms and he had the same procedure, which resulted in him being completely deaf.
Although there was a slight adjustment period to losing his hearing, Mr. Seabastian has been learning different hand signals. We are happy to report that he is thriving at home with his family and loves to sleep, snuggle, play with toys, eat, and repeat.
We love and celebrate that our team is committed to adopting pets in need of loving homes. Mr. Seabastian, along with all of our staff pets, helps fill our hospital with joy!!!

Shout out to Rachel, one of our amazing and talented Neurology technicians, for participating.
Meet our furry friend Oliver. Oliver visited DCVR in March 2018 with a urethral blockage. After providing treatment, Oliver was referred to a local veterinary clinic for a cystotomy to remove bladder stones. Unfortunately, he came back to DCVR the day after surgery because he was profoundly dehydrated and spent a few days with our team to get his health back on track.
We are happy to share Oliver is doing great these days and loves to cuddle, play with his laser pointer, chase his cat sister, and brother all over the house, and absolutely loves trying to steal food from mom and dad!
Join us as we send Oliver and his family lots of positivity.
Mr. Blaize and all his cuteness brought lots of smiles to our hospital.
