October goals: optimize mental health!
Happy Sober October!
.
Some of you asked for more solutions on here, so here you go!.
.
Carnitine is a nutrient that is depleted with chronic alcohol use. It’s a very important nutrient for fat metabolism in the body.
.
❌Reminder that I am not your doctor and I am not recommending doses on here, but the research doesn’t lie! :).💗.
.
L-Carnitine has been used to facilitate weight loss and for reducing alcohol cravings.
.
It doesn’t replace good diet, nutrition and lifestyle changes, but has been shown to help with cravings and metabolism.

October 10th is Mental Health Awareness day.
.
Dr.Thorne’s 4 pillars for promoting balanced mental health:
.
1️⃣Eat real food, avoid refined ultra processed foods that are nutrient-poor, and of course alcohol.
.
2️⃣Connection and Community are essential. I recommend therapy or coaching to all of my patients. Community can include making meals together.
.
3️⃣Movement: research continues to repeat that regular exercise and movement of the body promotes better mental health.
.
4️⃣Adequate Sleep: Difficulty sleeping and anxiety are no longer suppose to be treated separately because they are so related. Prioritize sleep!.

Take a breath. Take the next step. Tomorrow the sun will still rise.
I was recently asked about my thoughts on “a glass a day keeps the doctor away.”
.
The research is piling up and it’s not favoring that old adage anymore.
.
More and more individuals are experiencing the health benefits and improvements off alcohol.
.
It’s not the end all cure all, but it’s a great jumping off point before starting additional medications or supplements.
.
Happy Dry January my friends. Soak up the benefits of a cleaner system this month, and if it feels good try it for another month? 💕.

Gentle reminder that you are already doing so much.
.
You are enough.
.
You are worthy.
.
I have to have people remind me of this very thing all the time. 🙄.
.
We’ve got one precious human life to live and then it’s gone in a blink of an eye. If you have kids, you know how quickly time passes and how quickly they grow.
.
Applaud yourself for the small goals, the baby steps towards progress as much as you do the big ones.
.
Sending light and love this evening. 💕

Addiction is such a loaded word. In incites intense imagery of desperation, lack of control and pain and suffering for me. That’s how we as a society have depicted addiction.
.
The term “addiction” I believe is slowly being redefined as we all realize that we are all addicted to things.
.
It doesn’t even have to be a substance like alcohol, sugar or drugs or even an activity like social media, porn or gaming. It could also be being addicted to an outcome or having control, which is something acoa’s learn early on.
.
I wasn’t addicted to alcohol, it was just the first effective tool I found for filling the void. First it was sugar, then it was alcohol. I was addicted to the feeling of filling the void.
.
Fortunately along the way I learned to rewire my thinking surrounding alcohol after I read Annie Graces This Naked Mind. I highly recommend filling the void with other things, it’s a life changer. ;)

What would you order? :)
.
I consider alcohol to be a drain for many of our essential nutrients and our energy.
.
It greatly impacts our health. As a naturopathic doctor I aim to identify and treat the root cause of any disease. Sometimes alcohol is the root cause of symptoms and sometimes alcohol is just masking the root cause of the symptoms.
.
I have found that by removing alcohol it becomes much easier to regain health or at least to identify the barriers to health.
.
Everyone and anyone can experience the health benefits of embracing an alcohol-free lifestyle.
.
You don’t have to be an alcoholic to want better health, or to experience the long-term benefits and physical changes that go along with giving up drinking.
.
The changes don't happen over night, and depending on the duration and severity of drinking it will be different for everyone.
.

Alcohol is a major contributor to health problems, but it’s not the only obstacle.
.
I have found in practice that when we remove alcohol it becomes easier to identify other barriers to health.
.
Alcohol does a good job of masking the root cause.
.
Sometimes the root cause IS the alcohol though. That’s why for some people you hear, “I lost weight! I’ve never felt better, I’m so freaking healthy now!” 🤩.
.
But then there are others that say “I’ve been sober a few years and still feel like poop.” 💩.
.
You’ve gotta dig in guys! Don’t just lay back and wait for things to happen. Carpe diem your health!
.
Let’s identify the other barriers to feeling your best and living your best life. Sobriety should be a celebration of your body and mind, not a strictly miserable 😩 experience.
.
Blood work, functional lab work, nutrition, therapy, do something new, try something new. Everyone’s body is different and will heal at different rates.
.
But it sure as hell gets a lot easier to heal when you pull out that chronic drip of poison. Your body says, “thank you, no I can explain what’s going on easier.” Your body and mind don’t speak the same language. So your body speaks with symptoms.
.
📣 Next week I’m doing another free live workshop on healing your mind and body after alcohol. Thursday-Sunday.
.
📣 I am also unveiling my new sober fueled health program starting April 1st. DM me for more details or make sure you’re in the FB group so you don’t miss out!

“Everything I have ever let go of has claw marks in it.”
.
I’ve left claw marks in wine bottles, claw marks in a relationship with my alcoholic mother, claw marks in other versions of myself.
.
Things I wasnt ready to let go of...
.
I fought with my 🍷 drinking habit for a long time. I convinced myself Ii had more self control than my parents did and that I wouldn't turn out like them. I convinced myself that I was more fun with alcohol and needed it to relax. I fought the urges to give it up...🌬until I finally just let go.
I fought my 👩👧codependency to my alcoholic mom for many years. I convinced myself that I could save her, that if I could just call her everyday, find the right vitamin or provide her with the right motivation that she would stay sober. I fought hard to stay in her life keeping her afloat….🌬until I finally just let go.
I fought hard for my🏃🏻♀️ “controlling nature,” thinking that I just liked to do everything on my own terms. I fought for my black and white thinking, because I thought I always knew the answer. I fought back the urge to cry, because it was pointless...🌬until I finally just let go.
It’s not easy to let go, but it’s actually the most powerful and transformative act you can do sometimes.
What are some things you’ve left claw marks on?❤️
