Joseph T. McGinn, Jr., M.D., is a thoracic surgeon and the chief of cardiac surgery at Baptist Health Medical Group. Dr. McGinn is a pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and is known for developing a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting procedure known as “The McGinn Technique” as an alternative to open-heart surgery. He has since performed more than 1,500 of these procedures and trained hundreds of doctors worldwide.
Dr. McGinn joined Baptist Health South Florida from Atrium Health in Charlotte, N.C., where he served as the Francis Robicsek, M.D., Ph.D. Endowed Chair of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and professor of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. Previously, he was the medical director of The Heart Institute of New York and chairman of the department of surgery at Staten Island University Hospital.
Dr. McGinn has been recognized with numerous professional awards, most recently the Irish America Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 (2018) and New York Magazine Best Doctors in New York (1998 to 2015). He has also been recognized by the American Heart Association for excellence in medicine and is the recipient of the Samuel L. Koontz Award for Clinical Excellence.
When he is not treating patients, Dr. McGinn enjoys boating with his family and is an avid football fan.
