A Reminder of Evil in this World, a picture of my soot covered shoes from 9/11.
I usually do not post much on social media, let alone twice within a span of ten days. I could not help but write my thoughts about 9/11 after last evening’s discussion with a colleague and how memories of that tragic event relate to present-day circumstances.
I will never forget 9/11. I had just finished the first surgery of the morning when we heard on the news that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. As we all stood there just staring at the TV screen in disbelief, a second plane hit the South Tower. We all knew that this was not just an accident. I will never forget watching people jumping out of windows to their death. New York Eye & Ear Infirmary where I was training at that time was located just about a mile and a half away from the WTC. The hospital immediately went into an emergency mode. We scrambled to prepare for all the wounded coming our way. Within a couple of hours after the planes hit the Towers, four of us loaded basic eye care equipment and medicines took a bus, and headed to set up a triage at the site. The bus dropped us about ten blocks from the WTC. Even though the sun was out it was almost dark as we walked towards the fallen towers. The streets, the trees, and the buildings were blanketed with dense gray soot. Thousands of damaged cars lined both sides of the street. Papers, bottles, and debris floated all around us. The financial center of the world where thousands of people crowded the streets till a few hours prior, now wore an eerie silence interrupted only by the ambulance and police vehicle sirens. It was surreal to watch the mangled steel and fires burning everywhere. To our dismay, there were not many survivors to treat, we remained at the site to help hundreds of firefighters and police officers who were exposed to toxic debris in their eyes.
The evil struck us brutally and brought us to our knees. If there was ever a silver lining to the horrific day; we came together as a nation and we rebuilt. We endured and we survived, and we excelled together. In the face of adversity, we always rise as a nation. We have done this throughout our history. From fighting the British for Independence, writing the most ingenious document, the Constitution, the Civil War, the two World Wars, and many more calamities over the last two hundred years, we have risen and excelled as a society. Why then I ask, do we feel the doom now? Why the hatred and anger towards each other? Why are we not able to put our differences aside and come together as a nation? I strongly believe that together we can conquer the doom and come together as a nation.
I don’t think anyone could have said it better than our beloved former President, John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

Nineteen years ago, on this day, on this field, 40 brave men and women triumphed over terror and gave their lives in defense of our nation. Their names and their stories are forever inscribed on the eternal roll call of American heroes.
Today, we pay tribute to their sacrifice, and we mourn deeply for the nearly 3,000 precious and beautiful souls who were taken from us on September 11th, 2001.
