Save this post! Plan a short 3 hour trip from Salt Lake City to the astounding Capitol Reef National Park. The white snow on the gorgeous red rock is a not to miss scene! It’s winter but one of my favorite visits with my 2 kiddos to Southern Utah.
Here are highlights for a visit in the winter months to Capitol Reef:
1. Know that most restaurants will be closed. Red Sands is a nice place to stay and check out their land and their horse ‘Whiskey.’
2. Take the 10 mile scenic drive and make sure to stop off the beaten path and explore.
3. Stop by visitor center they’ve renovated.
4. Stop at the Old Schoolhouse in the Fruita historic district a couple miles past visitor center.
5. Make sure you return in the fall for harvest season to pick apples at the Gifford Homestead In the heart of Fruita which is in Capitol Reef National Park on the main road.
2020 you’ve challenged all of us and showed us how strong and resilient we can be standing alone and together. I’m counting down the minutes to bring #pandemic2020 to an end and so hopeful for what #2021 will bring for all of us. 💫🎉❄️✨

‘Will you be my friend?’ 🐴
• Sometimes you have these grand plans. You drive down to Capitol Reef National Park, one of Utah’s mighty 5 and get a ticket. (Officer was nice only 5 over. Thanks Aurora police)
• Sometimes you plan to visit said park and a snowstorm hits. (No scraper and roads are too treacherous)
• Sometimes the main reason you picked the hotel was for the pool and forget the kids swimsuits but brought 3 adult ones.
• Sometimes you need dinner but EVERY restaurant in Torrey, Utah is closed except the gas station Subway (which ran out of bread)
• AND THEN sometimes you make the best of it and your plan B turns out to be A okay because we can wear our street clothes in the pool and instead of a grand hike we can play snowball fights in the hotel grounds and Ellanor can ask the hotel horse, Whiskey, ‘will you be my friend?’
The kids don’t care and they have smiles on their faces, that’s all that matters. ❄️🦄💫✨
