Are you going to be the next cycle breaker in your family ?? Trauma is a cycle that you can get stuck in without even knowing you’re stuck. Sure, you’re aware that you feel anxiousness, depression, etc. at times - but did you know it’s a constant cycle ?? Acknowledging the cycle is the first step - you just did it. Effort, assistance, and support comes next. Reconnection is where your effort, support, and assistance is needed. Reconnection is about choosing to engage with the new reality and with “the other,” if the trauma was caused by another person or group. It involves learning different forms of justice to address what happened, considering forgiving, and using conflict transformation practices to move toward the future. It’s also about integrating what happened into a new individual or group identity. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalwellness #yourfeelingsarevalid #validation #Drnortontherapy #healing #mentalhealthstruggles #trauma #traumatherapy

‼️‼️‼️ We’ve been conditioned to think that taking breaks is negative, it’s wasted time. While this mindset can help push you to the next level it’s important to realize that taking breaks are OKAY !! There’s no need to push yourself to the point of exhaustion - that’s counter productive. When you’re mentally and physically exhausted, how can you give your all if you’re tired?? We need to normalize taking breaks - whether it’s a short 5 minutes away from the computer for a breath of fresh air, or a 30 minute break to relax and practice mindfulness. You deserve to take a second for yourself !! By taking more breaks, it can increase your motivation and productivity levels. Next time you beat yourself up for wanting to take a break - remind yourself that it’s more beneficial to do so than to push through. #takeabreak #takeabreath #chill #relax #motivation #drnortontherapy #mentalwellness #normalizementalhealth #rechargeyourself
A self-care cheat sheet for Autumn 🎃🧡 Self-care is important not only for your mental health, but also your physical health. You need self-care year-round, but some of your self-care practices may need to change with the seasons. Obviously, your warm weather favorites may not be doable in colder weather. Bringing some seasonal self-care activities into your routine can also provide needed variety and help you tap into different interests, feelings, and energies. Fall is here and with it comes busier schedules, colder weather, and shorter days. With this weather and the time change, we can feel a bit thrown off, not grounded. Autumn is a natural time for reflection and gratitude and it provides some special opportunities to use seasonal self-care ideas like the ones in the picture. #selfcare #autumnvibes #takecareofyourself #selflove #drnortontherapy #celebrateyourself #youdeserveit #treatyourself
There’s a difference between self-awareness and self-acceptance !! Being self-aware is the first step - while self-acceptance is what follows on the journey of self-improvement !! Self acceptance defines awareness of one's strengths and weaknesses - which allows one to accept their capabilities and feeling of satisfaction with own self despite of being aware of your deficiencies. There are benefits of self-acceptance & self-awareness through therapy: • Increasing your acceptance of self and others. • Having deeper, more meaningful relationships (with self and others). • Developing a sense of purpose • Increasing your sense of satisfaction, peace, and appreciation of what life has to offer. #selfawareness #selfawarenessjourney #selflove #selfacceptance #selfacceptancejourney #drnortontherapy #mentalwellness #love #loveyourself
Some gentle reminders for your Tuesday... Sometimes you might put too much pressure on yourself without realizing it. Being too hard on yourself can cause you to feel mental and physical stress. Mental health and physical health go hand in hand. If you’ve noticed physical symptoms (like overeating, trouble sleeping, neck pain, or stomach pains) this could be due to putting your mental health on the back burner. You might take care of yourself reasonably well in some ways, but have some domains of self-care that you never prioritize. Consider allowing yourself the time, money, or mental space you need. Suppression is too common in today’s time. Consider reaching out to someone to help sort out everything going on - there’s no shame in asking for help. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #youmatter #yourenotalone #drnortontherapy #mentalwellness #itsokaynottobeokay #therapy #counselor

What energy are you trying to have this week ?? Set different goals each Monday. This is a very beneficial routine to start - but it can take practice and motivation. By writing down what you anticipate this week and the goals surrounding them can help to hold you accountable. It’s also important to mention that self-care goals should also be included !! It’s up to YOU to make the week as positive and fun as possible. It can be helpful to think about: 1) What’s important to you. 2) What do you want to accomplish? 3) What do you want out of life? Take Small Steps - Break down big goals into smaller ones so they are more manageable and easier to reach. So by setting small goals for each week - you will feel as if you accomplished more - rather than constantly worried that you haven’t done enough and never have a second to stop and care for yourself. #selfcare #mondaymotivation #mondaymorning #goals #settinggoals #mentalhealth #mentalwellbeing #drnortontherapy #youmatter #takecareofyou #youreimportant
Communication is key 🔑 Good communication skills are key to success in life, work and relationships. Without effective communication, a message can turn into error, misunderstanding, frustration, or even disaster by being misinterpreted or poorly delivered. The ability to ask for what we want is an essential skill. Clear communication isn’t about getting your way. It's about growing a relationship rooted in respect and communication that reflects the needs of everyone involved. Share your needs and wants - no one can read minds. #communication #communicationiskey #communicationskills #communicationtips #drnortontherapy #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mindreader #mindful
Be kind. This one is for everyone trying their best to heal from things they don’t speak about. This one is for those fighting their battles in silence, no matter the reason. A memory is a thought, and a thought has NO power or meaning whatsoever - unless you give it power or meaning. You have many thoughts about things that happened long ago, and these thoughts cause no problems. But some thoughts are sticky. You have an emotional reaction to them and you think them over and over. Here’s your sign to start your journey in overcoming whatever barrier you’re facing. You have the power within - trust yourself and the process. Reach out for support - we’re here for you. #silentbattles #silentbattlesarereal #drnortontherapy #mentalhealth #healing #healingjourney #healingquotes #yougotthis #ibelieveinyou
The way we respond matters. Your support and encouragement can play an important role in your loved one’s recovery. You can help them to cope with depression symptoms, overcome negative thoughts, and regain their energy, optimism, and enjoyment of life. Start by learning all you can about depression and how to best talk about it with your friend or family member. These tips are only the beginning. If someone you love is depressed, you may be experiencing any number of difficult emotions, including helplessness, frustration, anger, fear, guilt, and sadness. These feelings are all normal. It’s not easy dealing with a friend or family member’s depression. And if you neglect your own health, it can become overwhelming - so it’s important for you to care for yourself during these times, too. #depression #depressionhelp #depressionawareness #drnortontherapy #depressionisreal #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters
‼️ read that twice ‼️ Your mental health matters. You matter. Taking care of your mental health is always important, but even more so during these unprecedented times. Anytime we feel a loss of control - it is completely normal to have feelings of fear and anxiety. Other common feelings may include sadness, anger, confusion, hypersensitivity, and grief. Asking for help is okay. I encourage you to reach out for help if you’ve been thinking about it. Why not start now? What’s holding you back? Positive self-talk techniques can be taught and explored during therapy. Learning what will work for you, specifically, is the goal. It’s okay to ask for help. #askingforhelp #askforhelp #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #drnortontherapy #counseling #gotocounseling #itsokaynottobeokay
Listen to what your body is telling you ‼️ Everyone has anxiety from time to time, but chronic anxiety can interfere with your quality of life. While anxiety is most recognized for behavioral changes - it can also have serious consequences on your physical health. It’s important to note these physical changes to listen to your body and give it what it needs. Anxiety, the body’s response to stress, is how your body alerts you to threats and helps you get ready to deal with them. This is called the fight-or-flight response. Your body isn’t meant to always be on alert. Being in constant fight-or-flight mode, which can happen with chronic anxiety, can have negative and serious effects on your body. It’s worth noting so a professional can help you effectively and appropriately. Note your triggers or stressors - oftentimes physical symptoms of anxiety can get misdiagnosed by your doctor - pay attention to you body !! #anxiety #anxietyawareness #anxietysupport #drnortontherapy #anxiousmind #physicalsymptomsofanxiety #listentoyourbody #anxietyproblems
With Valentine’s Day approaching and the timelines are flooded with couples - remember this - you DON’T need a partner to feel important or worth it !! Society makes it seem like the right way to live is to be in a relationship. Sometimes being single seems to be looked down upon — but that’s a sham! There’s no shame at all in being single, even on Valentine’s Day. Don’t feel like you need to be in a relationship or dating somebody to enjoy the holiday. Since you aren’t showering someone else with love on the holiday, why not shower yourself in some self-love ?? Treat yourself - you deserve to give YOURSELF love !! #itsokaytobesingle #youmatter #valentinesday #drnortontherapy #mentalwellness #singlelife #february #mentalhealth #youreworthit
You gotta set boundaries with YOURSELF, too !! Boundaries are essential to healthy relationships and, really, a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill. Unfortunately, it’s a skill that many of us don’t learn - We might pick up pointers here and there from experience or through watching others. But for many of us, boundary-building is a relatively new concept and a challenging one. So let’s start now !! You can’t set good boundaries if you’re unsure of where you stand. So identify your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual limits. Ask yourself what are you willing to tolerate ? What had a large effect on your day to day life ? What needs to change to reach happiness and peace ?? Better late than never. Start now ‼️ #Boundaries #Settingboundaries #selfcare #selflove #drnortontherapy #valentines #selfhelp #betterlatethannever #nowornever #loveyourself #love
🚩🛑‼️ You may find yourself justifying your partner’s bad behavior or totally overlooking signs that this person may not make a loving, supportive long-term partner. It’s time to stop making excuses and advocate for yourself or leave !! Trust your gut !! If something feels off in a relationship, whether it’s a short-term or a long-term thing, it’s worth looking for red flags. Even though red flags aren’t necessarily death sentences for relationships - knowing what they are prepares you for when someone tries to sideswipe you. You’ll be better empowered to seek resolution for any conflict, as well. #redflags #relationshipredflags #relationships #relationshiphelp #drnortontherapy #mentalwellness #february #mentalhealth #advocateforyourself #toxicrelationships
The red flags 🚩 are easy to identify - what about the green flags ?? When you are dating someone, or even married, you might be on the lookout for signs that this might not be a great fit. It makes sense - we’ve all experienced hurt, and we want to cut our losses before getting too invested. But often we’re so busy focusing on these red flags and putting our emotional guard up that we fail to pay attention to the good signs to keep an eye out for !! If you focus on the negatives - that’s all you’ll look for and see. Remember - this list is only a guide !! If you are dating someone you really like and find them don’t have all of these qualities - don’t be overly concerned. In that case this list may be a guide for how to improve your relationship even more - not an invitation to end the relationship - however respect YOUR BOUNDARIES !! #greenflags #relationships #relationshipthreads #lovelangauges #love #valentines #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #drnortontherapy #relationshipredflags #wellness #loving #lovelove #communication
It’s not only important to know your love language for your relationship - but also for self-love !! Your mind and your body pick up on your thoughts and how you treat yourself - The more you introduce kind and loving acts to yourself, the more integrity and trust you will gain with yourself. Imagine how you treat yourself on a daily basis as if you were another person, in a relationship with you. It can change your perspective on how you talk and love yourself. If you wouldn’t talk to a friend a certain way - why treat yourself that way ?? #selflove #love #lovelanguage #selfcare #drnortontherapy #lovemonth #mondaymotivation #blackmentalhealth #mentalwellness #selfrespect
