Dr. Paul Sommer is a native of Valparaiso. He attended Valparaiso High School where he majored in science and swam for coach Skip Bird. He graduated in 1979 and went on to DePauw University in Greencastle Indiana where he completed the pre-med curriculum and graduated with a double major in Biology and Psychology in 1983. During college he enjoyed competitive cycling. After college, Dr. Sommer attended the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine (Scholl College) affiliated with Illinois Masonic Medical Center and graduated in 1988. From there he completed a surgical hospital residency in foot surgery at the VA Medical Center in Johnson City Tennessee where he gained experience in everything from diabetic foot care to reconstructive surgery. Dr. Sommer then decided to return home to Porter County to begin his practice where he enjoys the satisfaction of seeing his patients "get back on their feet."In addition to practicing podiatric medicine and surgery, Dr. Sommer enjoys training and racing in triathlons. This has taken him to Hawaii, where he completed the Ironman Triathlon. He continues to train and compete in triathlons throughout the Midwest which adds experience and first-hand knowledge to the care of the sportsmedicine patients in his practice.
