Increased sweating got you down? 💦💦💦💦 Don’t despair, there are several effective treatment options for hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a condition of the nervous system that causes increased sweating. This occurs on the underarms, palms, feet, or even other areas of the body. It can worsen with activity, heat, or increased stress/anxiety. Topical solutions, wipes, medications, devices such as @dermadry, and even Botox injections can be used to keep you dry. Let’s talk melasma! 🧐 Melasma is a common condition that appears as irregular patches of tan, brown or brown-gray pigmentation, usually on the face. It affects women much more frequently than men and patients with darker skin are more likely to develop melasma. The most common trigger for melasma is ultraviolet light from sun exposure. Melasma may develop as a result of hormone changes due to pregnancy or certain medications, such as oral contraceptives. Recently, research has found that blue light emitted from light bulbs, computer screens and other electronic devices can worsen melasma. Melasma tends to run in families, which points to a genetic component of this disorder, too. When facial pigmentation first appears, it's important to see a dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis because melasma may be subtle and can look like other skin conditions. Once diagnosed, the goal of melasma treatment is to decrease the production of pigment and remove areas of excess pigmentation that already have appeared. Stay tuned, next week we will share recommended treatments and precautions you can take for melasma.
Dr. Fathi is always advocating for his patients. He will be representing the American Academy of Dermatology and its’ patients at the 2020 Legislative Conference. The Legislative Conference is the biggest opportunity each year for the American Academy of Dermatology members to discuss top-priority policy issues affecting the specialty and advocate on those issues to members of Congress. This year, Dr. Fathi and fellow dermatologists will be asking our legislators to support physician practices and preserve patients’ access to care, ensure Medicare stability for patients, and protect physicians working in national health crisis. Additionally, his team will be asking for physicians to retain clinical authority over a patient’s care to lessen the burden on patients required to go through step therapy protocols instituted by insurance companies. They will also be trying to reduce the burden of prior authorization and allow physicians to spend more time treating patients. Finally, they will be working to expand access to telehealth services during the COVID-19 PHE. #AADOnTheHill

How can you prevent ringworm and other skin conditions from contact sports? Dr. Fathi has shared some great tips with his brother, @the_arman_hammer, who is a Jiu Jitsu black belt! Check out some tips below: * Keep your skin clean and dry. * Don’t walk barefoot in areas like locker rooms or public showers. * Clip your fingernails and toenails short and keep them clean. * Change your socks and underwear at least once a day. * Don’t share clothing, towels, sheets, or other personal items with someone who has ringworm. * If you’re an athlete involved in close contact sports such as Jiu Jitsu, MMA, wrestling, etc. you should shower immediately after your practice session or match, and keep all of your sports gear and uniform clean. Don’t share sports gear (helmet, etc.) with other players. As always, be sure to make an appointment at PSDG if you have any dermatological questions or concerns!

Wondering what Dr. Fathi is using in this photo? A dermatoscope is a handheld instrument, similar to a magnifying glass. It can magnify by up to 10 times. During a skin exam, Dr. Fathi will clean your skin lesion with alcohol. He then will hold the dermatoscope on to your skin to examine the area very closely. This does not hurt or affect your skin. 🔍 Using a dermatoscope allows dermatologists to see tiny details of the skin that can’t be seen with the naked eye. This helps them diagnosis skin diseases or identify skin cancers as early as possible!

Diwali is called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra. On this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness). This is a great day for all of us to celebrate the awareness of our inner light!
