One of the first patients referred to my early practice in 1992 was a bodybuilder with gynecomastia, followed by additional patients I met at or who were referred from the gym and the world of bodybuilding. I was in turn pulled into that world, following their successes and learning about the sport, culminating with my entry onto the competitive state in 1996 at the urging of friends like @jaycutler, @wnbfpres and the man who started it all, @broderick1251. For the next ten years, I competed in the ANBC, INBF/WNBF, NPC and a few Muscle Mania shows with mixed success. Through competition, I met many wonderful people, and at the same time, my gynecomastia practice increased to nearly 80% of what I do today. Though I stopped competing in 2005, I didn’t veer from my bodybuilding lifetyle. Nonetheless I was pleasantly surprised with the results of the 2019 Cutler Classic, where I won my classes and qualified to compete at the NPC Universe and Masters Nationals last year, and again this year. The process has been fun with highs and lows, goals achieved and disappointments. Growth and improvement are always the aim, and missed marks are often just a lesson along the path to peak performance. This is a lifestyle, and the competitive process can be a feature of it if one chooses, but there are far more “bodybuilders” in the world than there are “competitive bodybuilders” and stepping on stage is a personal choice. Anyone who has done it will acknowledge the value that the discipline of contest prep can bring, but they will also recognize the stress of the challenge. The rewards have been great—with or without hardware! For now, my focus is on 4 weeks from today, the NPC Universe. I have hopes—I never have expectations. I will put my best foot forward and hope for the best.
