The Doc Smitty - Dr Justin Smith, Pediatrician January 14 at 10:25 PM · Toddler sleep is a mystery. I feel like you can do everything right and have the worst sleeper in the or have tons of bad habits and have a great sleeper. Here are 10 facts about toddler sleep that should help: 1) Toddlers need about 11-14 hours of sleep per day. Just like adults some need more than others. And the time at which they go to bed can vary pretty significantly. Most of these hours will come at night with a 1-2 hours nap to make up the difference during the day. 2) Interestingly, the normal amount of daily sleep per day has changed over time suggesting that sleep duration has significant environmental factors. Expectations, societal norms and other factors definitely play a role in whether parents think their child is a good or poor sleeper. If your friends all brag about their kids sleep keep in mind that most kids are having good and bad nights and few people are bragging about the bad ones. 20-30% of children have some issues at some point during the toddler years (you're not alone). 3) Bedtime routines are a critical part of maintaining good sleep habits for toddlers. A consistent bedtime routine without aggressive and stimulating play, turning off the TV and that ends with the child going to sleep on their own in their crib or bed are some key goals but bedtimes routines can otherwise differ significantly. 4) Children can stay in their crib as long as a family desires and the child is not able to or showing interest in crawling out. Transitioning to a big bed can be done at any time the family desires but is more difficult the younger the child is. 5) The most common sleep problem in young children is sleep onset association causing difficulty going to sleep or early awakenings. Toddlers who require a certain stuffed animal, pacifier or the presence of a caregiver at bedtime can have trouble transition back to sleep from lighter awakenings in the night if that object is not present (this is especially true if they require a caregiver in the room when falling asleep). Slowly decreasing their reliance on these objects until you can take them away is probably the best way to transition away from the associations. 6) Repetitive requests at bedtime are probably the 2nd most common, benign sleep issue in toddlers. One more story, one more drink, lay day for a second...over and over again. Gentle but firm reassurance and hard boundaries are the best way to get rid of these "curtain calls." If you give in when they escalate to a 7 tonight, they'll start at an 8 tomorrow. 7) Whether or not a child is getting sufficient sleep is challenging because of the varied need of each child. Children should not have excessive day time sleepiness or behavioral disruptions in associated with being tired. If children are showing either of these signs, it is important to not only assess the duration of sleep but also the quality. Sleep apnea and snoring are the most common disruptions in sleep quality and if you hear them, you should discuss them with your pediatrician. 8) Night terrors often start in the later toddler years (around 2 1/2) and occur in about 40% of children. Children having night terrors are generally very agitated or screaming, have a racing heart and may be sweaty. They are not able to be consoled and sometimes seem as if they are staring right through you or not aware you are in the room. Fortunately, they do not remember the episodes...so I always say they are most terrifying for everyone else but the child. 9) Most sleep problems resolve with time, consistency and a gentle approach to helping the child at bedtime or transitioning back with bedtime awakenings. Asking friends and family can be helpful if you keep in mind that every child will require a different approach and it's ok to modify any advice you get according to your child's needs. 10) If you continue to have trouble with your child's sleep, talk to your pediatrician or a sleep consultant. Sleep medicine specialists and sleep studies might be indicated when children continue to have significant problems.

It's National Dentist Day! Here's some things a pediatric dentist will be glad you know... 🦷 - Even before your babies have their teeth, it's important to clean their mouths/gums with a clean, wet washcloth or infant finger brush after each feeding. - Teething symptoms, mainly drooling, can start as early as 3 months, although the first tooth may not appear until 6 months of age. - Is that a tooth? When the first tooth erupts, start using an extra soft toothbrush and a grain of rice amount of toothpaste with fluoride to brush your baby's teeth twice daily. - Your babe should see the dentist by 1 year of age. - Start flossing when your child has multiple teeth, especially if there is little or no gap between the teeth. - Parents should brush their children's teeth until they are 10 years old because their dexterity is still developing. You can allow your child to brush first or after you brush their teeth. Hugs to all the dentists out there! Thanks for keeping our smiles beautiful! 😁
