Due to the unforeseen circumstances of the COVID-19 the Flat Iron Farm Christmas lights display will be CLOSED. We have thought about every possibility for this to happen this year but this is the safest option out there for the safety of the county and the employees that help put this on. The drive through portion will be closed as well with no lights on the farm at all. This is a very difficult decision to make but hope you everyone understands. Thank you!

Today was the original last day to fill out the Census but it has been extended to October 5. If you haven't responded yet you can do it online or call 1-844-330-2020. Filling out the Census will help assure our share comes to St. Mary's County to assist with Medical, Emergency Services, School lunches, road repair and more!

Scholarship to Help Truck Driving Program
A new scholarship set to honor the memory of James “Jay” Harold Hills will provide financial assistance to students enrolled in the Commercial Truck Driving Training program at the College of Southern Maryland. The annual fund was established by Hills’ wife, Annie.
Hills passed away in 2019 after working in the excavating industry for more than 30 years as part of his dad’s family business, Larry Hills and Sons. Together with his brother – the Hills have operated a prominent, successful business that has served the tri-county area for more than 50 years.
“Jay took over running the business when his father retired,” explained Annie Hills. “His love for playing in the dirt and driving huge equipment mesmerized those of us who knew nothing about it. I would always say he used excavators like I use a blender in the kitchen. He was truly amazing.”
According to his wife, Hills was well-known in Southern Maryland for his calm demeanor, attention to detail, hard work and honesty, “which made him be the best he could be and always humble and always open to learning new ideas or suggestions from customers.” He was also a volunteer at the Second District Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years as a driver and fireman.
“He loved his community,” Annie Hills shared. “Jay always gave of himself. Everyone loved Jay Hills, I know I did, more than life. He always did the right thing, stayed humble and everything was done the best way possible and no cutting corners. If you can take away anything from his story, just know Jay was a hero to many – a love of his wife, family and friends and truly dedicated to his trade and making his father proud.”
CSM is among the few schools in the country that have been able to earn certification by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) for its Class A Commercial Driver’s License training. PTDI is a national, nonprofit organization sponsored by the nation’s trucking industry to advance truck driving proficiency, safety and professional standards among drivers which, in turn, will foster benefits for all stakeholders, including motor carriers, insurers, training schools, government bodies at all levels, funding organizations and the American public. The industry’s annual demand for new drivers hovers around the 80,000 mark.

The James ‘Jay’ Harold Hills Memorial Scholarship will provide financial assistance for tuition, fees, books and other related supplies for students registered in the Commercial Truck Driver Training program at CSM. To be eligible, the student(s) must be a resident of Southern Maryland; possess a high school diploma or its equivalent; demonstrate financial need; and be enrolled in the Commercial Truck Driver Training program at CSM. The applicants are also required to submit an essay explaining their financial need and how this scholarship will help them achieve their career goals. In addition, the scholarship recipient must write a thank you note explaining the importance of this scholarship toward their career goals.

Bowes Family Honors Patriarch with Scholarship
Helps HVAC Students with Tuition
The family of Robert H. Bowes has renamed their company’s scholarship to include their father’s name. The T.N. Bowes HVAC Scholarship in Memory of Robert H. Bowes will aid students enrolled in the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program at CSM.
Originally established with the CSM Foundation in 2013 to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of T.N. Bowes Heating and Air Conditioning, the scholarship was set up by the company’s owners Tommy and Joy Bowes. Renaming the fund this year honors Tommy’s father, who passed in 2018.
The elder Bowes attended Little Flower School and graduated from Ryken High School in 1959. He attended the United States Air Force Academy until 1961. He graduated from University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering in 1964 and went on to graduate from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School (USN TPS) in 1966.
Bowes worked in the Flying Qualities and Performance Branch of the Flight Test Division and was then transferred to TPS where he taught from 1967-1978. Due to his exemplary performance both academically and professionally, he was sent to Princeton University from where he earned a Master of Science degree in Engineering in 1969. He retired as an aeronautical engineer after 28 years of civil service April 15, 1988.
Despite all of his education, merits and accolades, he is best known in the Southern Maryland community as “Captain Bob,” the owner of a charter fishing business he started in 1972. Over the years, Bowes used his skills on the water for various passenger activities including underwater recreational and inspection diving, renovation of SMECO power line towers, logistics support and tidal studies for the U.S. Geological Survey Team and the Naval Research Laboratory and salvage operations. He also used his boat to give back to his community by providing fishing trips and boat rides for the children at the Muscular Dystrophy camp at Camp Maria, rides for the elderly and homeless with So Others Might Eat (SOME), and 43 years of carrying passengers to the St. Clements Island Blessing of the Fleet in support of the 7th District Optimist Club.
“He performed all of these professional and community missions while helping his wife, Patricia A. Bowes raise seven children,” shared Joy Bowes. “He led by example and used his analytical skills in everyday life by problem solving and making repairs on household items, boat motors, car motors and more. He taught his children how to take broken items apart, diagnose the issue, and re-assemble them once repaired.”
It was Bob Bowes “hands-on” approach that guided his son Thomas N. Bowes to open his own Heating and Air Conditioning company by the age of 23 after receiving his technical training and working for other companies for a few years.
“He had fantastic family role models with regards to work ethic and community caring and launched his HVAC business on the date of his father’s retirement in 1988,” Joy said of her husband.

I have a new feature for the Livestream! If you have been following long enough, you know that the comment section can get overrun with "what's going to happen where I live," questions. Well, I think might have a solution...
While I do show snow maps (and I would hope people would know where they are on the map), there will now be a ticker that runs the whole time showing my forecasted accumulations. This will be on the bottom of the screen showing totals for 31 towns across the coverage region; spanning from Scotland and Callaway to Bowie and Glen Bernie! Is this a feature that you like? Great job by SMECO on restoring power to all their customers in Southern Maryland after this ice storm. Many trees and power lines fell throughout the area causing multiple outages.

SMECO crews and contractors worked throughout the night and continue to work this morning restoring power to our members in southern St. Mary’s and Calvert counties. Freezing rain led to ice buildup causing multiple trees to fall and affect main distribution feeder lines in the Piney Point, Valley Lee, Callaway, Solomons, St. Leonard and other areas in the southern portion of our service area. Ice presents the most challenging conditions for outage restoration because of tree damage, difficult access for our equipment, and hazardous road conditions. We will continue to work throughout the day today to restore service.
Sorry but we will be closed for the day. We lost power and after talking to SMECO it's not expected to be back on until this afternoon.
We are closing early at 4 pm due to the weather. We want to make sure all our employees and customers stay safe. We will see you tomorrow!
We have sad news from the lumber yard. Our beloved “Mama Cat” has passed away at 17 years old. It feels like she has always been a part of the yard but we’re pretty sure she first appeared as a kitten around 2004 and was tough right from the beginning! She was the queen of the lumber yard and could often be found hanging out in the saw room with the guys. She will be deeply missed. If you have any pictures or stories of our Mama Cat we would love to hear them.
