Friends...
I want to share some thoughts & information to hopefully spread awareness around COVID Testing. We have received more inquiries than I can answer in a day. hope to share my thoughts with friends who can in turn help others.
PCR COVID Testing is the "Gold Standard"
(FYI..this is why its required for travel)
So here it goes...this is what we are seeing and what the evidence tells us.
Rapid testing does NOT equal ACCURATE testing and is NOT appropriate for a majority of patients. Yes, I'm sorry that there isn't a clinician on the providing end of rapid testing to inform patients that the test they are paying for isn't appropriate for them. The only way to change this is through educating the consumer.
In a nut shell rapid testing was intended for very sick patients for quick diagnosis, especially those in high risk groups.
What does this mean for you?
This means that rapid testing is not consistently accurate unless your have about 7-10 days worth of the virus replicated in your body system. PCR Testing is the "Gold Standard" to detect COVID. A PCR Test can detect COVID in 3-5 days (I prefer 5 🙂...better safe than sorry)
We are consistently seeing patients fall victim to "false" results from rapid testing. The virus is spread because the person "believes" that they are negative (no one told them differently and took the money), when they are actually VERY COVID positive. The patient did not have enough of the virus in their system to be detected at the time of rapid testing and have a false sense of security.
To put it in story form:
Story 1
Bob was exposed 3 days ago during (soccer, a party, etc). Bob was worried and wanted an instant result, instead of a PCR, so he waited in line for a rapid test. Bob was so relieved because his test was negative. Bob develops "cold like" symptoms but continues to go out and about (work, school, etc) because he believes that he has a cold. Its not COVID because he was negative. Meanwhile Bob is very contagious and spreading the virus. Bob gets a PCR that is positive and is shocked because he thought that he had a "cold" due to his previous negative test. Bob now has to call everyone that he has been in contact with the explain that he is positive. The Health Department also calls Bob.
Story 2
Bob from above again... Bob knows that the local hospitals offer rapid testing is you a really sick. There are clinicians at these hospitals triaging patients. Bob lies to the nurse and tells him/her that he is very symptomatic with COVID like symptoms because he wants an "instant" result. Bob receives erroroneous results (either positive or negative) because he had an inappropriate test.
Please...pretty please seek out the correct test or ask your doctor. RAPID is NOT ACCURATE, give the vaccine distribution time, follow precautions to keep our community safe, pray (if you pray), and most of all DON'T be BOB.
