Marc A Geyer February 2 at 10:37 PM · A Lesson In Societal Judgement and Bonnie Needs A Loving Forever Home I would like to introduce Bonnie. She is an adorable and loving purr machine. One of the sweetest cats I have ever been around. She currently resides in our gym room at our house. My wife and I would love to keep her; however, my allergies will not allow it. We do have 2 black cats that are semi-feral living full time in our backyard. We have had them both fixed and I built an automatic feeder for them. One (we named Ninja) has been with us since his mom abandoned him about 7 years ago and a female (we named Angel) that my wife rescued about 6 months after that. They just hang around the yard and keep the roof rats away. Until Thursday last week, we did not know Bonnie. We only knew of a black cat with a purple collar, a little pink bell and pinkish white ID tag. This cat started appearing in our backyard last summer. Although smaller than Ninja and Angel, she dominated when it came to Ninja and Angel’s feeding time. When either my wife or I would go outside, she would run away and over the wall. When we weren’t outside, she would rush in, scare the other cats away and promptly eat all the food. Both my wife and I thought this was a neighbor’s cat that was taking advantage of our automatic feeders. My wife and I resorted to setting timers when we were home, so we could be outside when the food dropped and make sure she did not steal the food. As time went by, she seemed to become somewhat emboldened and instead of running completely out of the yard, she would hide to see if we went back inside and then dart in before the other cat’s finished their meals. My thoughts of her actions were that she was acting like a spoiled little cat. It really upset me that this cat would be fed at her owner’s home and then come to our house and hog the food meant for Ninja and Angel. I envisioned this cat lounging around inside her owner’s home enjoying Fancy Feast cat food. Then, after eventually getting bored, decide to slip out the cat door and come over to our yard. For many months, we would shoo her away, telling and sometimes yelling at her to go home. Then she began to stop at the wall and look at us. Finally, I resorted to throwing small rocks near her to scare her away. I began to think of ways I could scare her enough that she would not come back. Last week my wife came inside and said that she had run under the storage shed in the yard. My wife had blocked the area she had run into and asked where the trap was. She was referring to the trap I had used to catch Ninja when he was a kitten to take him to the vet. I set up the trap and about 30 minutes later we caught her. The cat was not happy and displayed her upset by hissing at both of us. Eventually she settled down and I tried to see the tag on her collar. It took some doing, but eventually I was able to make out a full name and telephone number. Before calling the number, I quickly looked up last names in the neighborhood to see if I could find a match. The closest match I found was miles away. I then realized that maybe this cat was dumped in the area and not a neighbor’s cat. Something I had not considered before. My heart softened as I began to wonder if this cat was lost and had just been trying to survive all these months. Time to call the number and find out. Bonnie’s Story The pink side to the tag on the collar next to the worn pink bell showed the first name of Bonnie. There was also a last name and telephone number. Local area code 480-xxx-xxxx. I called the number and after a few rings a woman answered the phone. I said, “may I speak to Bonnie please”, and the woman replied that I must have the wrong number. I then said, “Is this the _____ residence”. “Yes it is”, she answered, “but there is no one named Bonnie here.” I then explained the cat with the tag and while I was talking I could hear a small gasp and a short pause of silence. She then told me, “that’s the cat’s name.” She explained to me that Bonnie is the cat’s name and they thought she had been run over by a car or something. She told me that they moved away from the area quite a while back after being transferred to Fort Hood, TX. They re-homed her before they left and the family they gave her to put her outside even though she had been an indoor cat. It was not until last September that they had found out that she had been missing for some time and presumed dead. While I was on the phone, my eyes were fixed on the cat and starting to become watery as I began to think about what this cat had been through. Just trying to survive. Suddenly losing her original family and then being placed outside in the elements and in foreign surroundings. Not knowing where she was and how to get back to comfort and safety. Wandering and exposed to all types of threats and scary experiences. Trying to find safe shelter to sleep while experiencing the pain of hunger by not having regular meals anymore. All this while daily temperatures are blazing hot and even the shady areas are very warm. Instincts, that as a kitten inside a home were playful are now having to be honed into survival skills in the outdoors. Learning not to trust anything, any other animals or even people. To think that she had entered our backyard and found a place where she could have shelter under the shed, a potential meal now and then, and other cats that were non-threatening. Knowing now that her aggressiveness of running in when the food fell from the feeders was purely for survival, I felt utter shame that I had judged her the way I did. I built my own story of Bonnie before I really knew Bonnie. We decided to bring her inside and give her some comfort, food and love. After a couple days, she has become the most loving and affectionate cat. It appears that she has quickly readjusted to being an inside cat and now doesn’t want us to leave her side. I realized this experience and the story I built was not unlike much of our society today. The judgement we have of individuals because of labels we place on them. I could make a laundry list of judgements made relating to people and events. Rushing to judgement because it fits our own personal narratives (perceptions) while not knowing or realizing the whole story. Can you imagine a world where we would all take a moment and not immediately jump to negative plausible reasoning, but instead first look at a positive plausible reason for an action or event? I think that used to be called, “Giving someone the benefit of the doubt”. Or “Not judging a man until you walk a mile in his moccasins.” Bonnie’s story is a great reminder for me and a lesson that I will not soon forget. Do you have a loving forever (Indoor Home) for Bonnie? She deserves it.

The Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic of Arizona February 18 at 10:36 PM · Today we met Derpy, a flowerhorn cichlid who came to see us for abnormal swimming and recent buoyancy concerns. A CT scan was performed to assess his swim bladder and other organs. Excess gas in the body results in positive buoyancy. Too little gas (such as compression of the swim bladder), can result in negative buoyancy. Fortunately for Derpy, no lesions were observed with any of his organs. Instead, we discovered several areas in his spine that were curved (i.e. scoliosis). This could not be detected externally just by looking at him! Scoliosis can affect the way fish swim and is likely the cause of his abnormal swimming behaviors. We are making a few changes to his home environment and diet that should hopefully help slow down any progression. You can follow along and watch Derpy at home: @petzombie and @da Derpy doo (Facebook) #fishmedicine #exoticveterinarymedicine #ctscan #cichlids #flowerhorncichlid #fishofinstagram

Bird Downy February 20 at 12:44 PM · Golden Retriever had to wear a cone for 13 days, so his owner got crafty with them.🐕 ❤️
Virginia Veterinary Centers February 26 at 1:00 PM · Meet Moose! Moose is a 7-year-old, male Labrador Retriever that presented to VVC Richmond's ER for a persistent cough, lethargy, panting, and inappetence (unwillingness to eat). After his evaluation, Moose was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle that makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure. During his hospitalization, Moose's heart disease progressed and he became oxygen dependent. He was transferred to Critical Care for further stabilization. Moose was currently on a grain-free diet, which may have contributed to his onset of cardiac issues, including suspected dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). At discharge, our critical care team recommended follow-up with a cardiologist for further care. Cardiology’s assessment was essentially the same as ours - dilated cardiomyopathy with a likely dietary component. He was started on vitamin supplements to potentially help with that. His blood taurine levels came back normal, which is one of the amino acids that has been deficient in some cases of DCM. However, there are many other potential links to diet. It’s too early to tell if his disease will improve with diet change. Moose will need repeated ultrasounds of his heart to say for sure, but for now, he’s doing well with treatment and is at home and back to his energetic self! #VVCSuccessStories

Keep an eye out for the following signs of arthritis in your pet: As our pets age, the chances of them getting arthritis begin to increase. Pets suffering from arthritis may begin to favor one leg over another. - Look for signs of spinal pain, such as a sore neck, unusual posture, or a hunch in their back. - Arthritis can cause pain in the joints, causing pets to not move as much and become lethargic. - As inactivity increases, your pet's muscles will begin to deteriorate. Please read…..thank you for everyone who has patient and kind in the past year during this pandemic. Our team truly appreciates you all. Alana Lewis Johnson March 11 at 9:35 PM · You have probably seen this logo, NOMV, across Facebook. If you’re don’t know what it means, it refers to the fact that veterinarians are the most likely to commit suicide of any profession. In the past week, the veterinary community lost three. THREE. There is also an incredibly high rate of suicide for our beloved support staff, from techs to front desk and everything in between. This year has been impossibly hard for veterinary medicine. In the midst of a pandemic, we have been responsible to find a way to keep providing care to patients while keeping ourselves safe. The shift to curbside service has not been easy for any of us, and combining that with unprecedented spikes in volume across the industry, wait times in the 6-8 hour range on average... tensions have been high. I have never seen more owners being more rude/cruel/impolite to veterinary staff than during this pandemic. We are a profession of givers... We will keep taking shifts and saying “yes” to “just one more case” and staying late because we care, so deeply- and we are givers. But NOMV wants everyone to recognize that we are human, we are fragile, and when we run out of the ability to give- we crumble. Please don’t be the asshole at a veterinary hospital that finally breaks a person. When you visit an animal hospital with your pet, we are all on the same team: help the animal. If you are in the industry and need a friend, I am always available- and suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center- Gilbert, AZ March 25 at 1:24 AM · Our emergency team works closely with many veterinary specialists to provide the best medical treatment for our patients. Rico is a 4-year-old, Shih Tzu who required care at both Arizona Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Center and Veterinary Neurological Center. Rico was admitted to AVECCC from Vet Neuro due to breathing difficulties and pulmonary crackles. He was originally hospitalized at the neurology center with a cervical brace for traumatic AA (atlantoaxial) subluxation and severe spinal cord contusion. He was also diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia. The AVECCC team placed Rico on mechanical ventilation until his pneumonia resolved. Once he was stabilized, Rico was transported back to Vet Neuro for AA stabilization and temporary tracheostomy placement. Upon completion of this procedure, Rico was carefully transferred back to AVECCC for post-op ICU care. His critical care team was fortunate to be part of Rico's slow, but steady recovery over the course of 10 days in our hospital. Rico is a fighter and we can't wait to see his progress as he continues to get stronger at home with his loving family! 💕 For more information about atlantoaxial subluxation: https://buff.ly/3f5EOqI
