I keep thinking about a phone conversation I had yesterday with a woman about my age who hasn't been employed in 20 years. She's been supported by her amazing husband who had a great career and provided a gorgeous family home. Well, he died right before Christmas from coronavirus complications leaving her in an extreme financial bind. Other than a small benefit from his employer there is no other income nor monies coming in. If I could have refinanced their home before he got sick it would have reduced the monthly payment by $380 per month but they didn't reach out, and the reality is, she can't pay a mortgage now no matter how cheap it is. She cried and I cried with her. It's AWFUL to not be able to help someone who is not only heartbroken from losing her husband, but then also facing financial ruin too. I could only offer her guidance which won't really change the end result... She'll need to sell the home or it'll end up being foreclosed.
I'm sharing this to PLEAD with you my friends... Please make 2021 the year that you get your finances in order. If you have family members that rely on your income then get life insurance if you can, and/or work hard to eliminate debts. If you have credit card debt then create a written plan/budget to pay them off in 2021. If you are not paying your credit card balance in full each month then you are throwing away money. Some people work 30 hours per week just to earn enough to pay their minimum payments. Don't be a slave to your monthly payments! Can you imagine if your income could be used for just housing and utilities and the rest you could save and play with? Devise a budget and work to make it a reality. And if you haven't refinanced your mortgage, EXPLORE IT! It typically costs $0 out of pocket to refinance so you're throwing away money every month by not refinancing.
I seldom do these lectures, but I receive these burdensome calls more than I should. Please PLEASE make your New Year's resolution to get your household finances in order. If you love your spouse/kids please don't leave them in financial ruin upon your death. None of us are promised tomorrow. I love you all!
