Eduardo Besser, MD is an eye physician and surgeon who has dedicated himself to his patients’ visual health since 2002. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. As a founding member of Angeles Eye Institute in Culver City, he specializes in refractive cataract surgery and laser vision correction in an effort to free patients from eyeglasses and contact lenses. He also provides comprehensive medical and surgical eye care, managing a wide breadth of acute and chronic eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, red/dry eyes, and chalazion removal.
Dr. Besser enjoys a distinguished reputation in the ophthalmology community for his surgical skill and high success rate. He is also highly regarded for clear communication skills and a talent for establishing rapport and trust with patients. Numerous medical colleagues – including fellow ophthalmologists and eye surgery technicians – have entrusted their own family members to Dr. Besser’s care. These medical professionals see firsthand the surgical technique and postoperative results of many, many ophthalmologists. When it’s time to choose a surgeon for themselves or a loved one, they choose Dr. Besser.
Always on the hunt for new ways to improve patient outcomes, Dr. Besser has developed and patented several industry-leading surgical instruments, including the Josephberg/Besser Scleral Depressor, which aids in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, and specialty forceps for complicated cataract procedures. He is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Jules Stein Eye Institute-UCLA, and lectures on current cataract surgery techniques at ophthalmology meetings and courses.
After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Dr. Besser earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Boston University School of Medicine, subsequently completing his residency training at New York Medical College and New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Besser was awarded the title of Chief Resident in Ophthalmology during his senior year. Upon graduating and relocating back to Southern California, he established himself in private practice. He continues to enjoy teaching advanced cataract surgery to medical residents at Harbor UCLA Medical Center.
No one attains success without the help of others along the way, and Dr. Besser pays it forward by donating his services locally and internationally. Over the years, he has donated his time to the Venice Family Clinic, helping to screen patients via telemedicine, often providing free services to patients who would otherwise have no access to care. He has also participated in pro bono medical/surgical missions to Mexico and Nicaragua.
Having been born in Mexico City and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Besser speaks fluent Spanish and English, and his office staff can translate Russian, Spanish and French. After years in practice and thousands of surgical procedures, he still feels fortunate to practice ophthalmology in the City of Angels.
