Today is the anniversary of the infamous Dred Scott decision, where Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled that African Americans were not citizens of the US and "had no rights which the white man was bound to respect." 164 years later, the fight for equality continues. Yesterday, the U.S. House Of Representatives passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The bill would end qualified immunity for law enforcement officers, improving police accountability by allowing victims of police misconduct and violence to bring civil suits against individual officers. Additionally, the bill would ban choke-holds and no-knock warrants, dangerous police tactics that result in civilian deaths all too frequently, and would require police to maintain data on police encounters, prohibit religious and racial profiling, and reallocate funding to support community-based policing programs. Charlotte "Top Doc" and single mother, Dr. Courtney Stephenson, represented by Cate Edwards, Mary Kathryn Kurth, and Andrew Avram, is bringing a $10 million suit against Atrium Health, alleging wrongful termination and retaliation after taking an FMLA leave of absence to care for her sick daughter.
Commenting on the case, Cate Edwards said, "Dr. Stephenson spent her entire life her, entire career saving the lives of other people’s babies, and she went home to take care of her own child and she was terminated as a result. It’s just not right.”
