Patricia Bible, founder and CEO of KaTom Restaurant Supply, an equipment supplier to restaurants, shared that the company faced a huge shortfall the first half of the year, as restaurants were one of the hardest hit business segments by COVID-19. The senior team came together, studied the trends, and developed a completely new line of business, a hand sanitizer product. In the last week of March, they had their lowest sales day, but by June their company’s financial health had rebounded, and they could keep their employees working.
Electro Soft, Inc is a Pennsylvania-based electronics manufacturer. CEO Karla Trotman saw photos of frontline workers wearing trash bags as PPE, and she and her employees were moved to somehow help, so they got creative. They took products from office supply, hardware and party good stores and created face shields for their local hospital. They ramped up and then shipped the shields to multiple states. Electro Soft’s workers remained employed, and with purpose.
A little retreat house in the Smokies was facing a dire financial outlook given its revenues came primarily from in-person retreats, which all needed to be cancelled. They began zoom workshops, and are partnering with a large university nearby to provide student housing to fill up its rooms until the pandemic passes.
How are you reimagining your workplace during this time? Send stories to me, and I’ll choose some for publication in my next newsletter. Send them to susan@susanpackard.com.
