#BlackHistoryMonth #BrightonColorado City of Brighton, Colorado Government February 10 at 9:15 AM · For Black History Month, we'd like to honor Brighton's own Dumond "Duke" White (1889-1977). Duke was part of the Brighton Boosters baseball team back in the 1920s (pictured in the team photo sitting on the bottom left) and became Colorado's first African American umpire, which turned into a 26-year career. Duke was also a shipping clerk at the Kuner Pickle Company before he became a sports celebrity. In 1968, the local diamond ball field at Brighton High School where Duke umpired many games was dedicated the "Duke White Field." Almost 50 years later in 2017, the Brighton Historic Preservation Commission unveiled a plaque to honor the memory of Duke White for the many contributions he made to baseball, youth and the Brighton community. #BlackHistoryMonth #BrightonCO
