Passing a school bus while it's loading or unloading children is dangerous and against the law. But, some drivers are in such a hurry - they take the risk. On Wed., Oct 24, Police and school bus companies from across the state are joining to take action through #OperationSafeStop. In Cranberry, the most frequent occurrences of passing stopped school buses take place along Rt. 19. State law allows motorists going the opposite direction of a stopped bus to proceed without stopping themselves IF it occurs on a highway where a permanent median barrier separates the two directions of traffic. However, Rt. 19 does not meet that standard, so traffic in both directions must stop while a school bus is loading or discharging children along the roadway.
Cranberry police will focus on Rt. 19 school bus stops. If convicted, a motorist could receive a $250 fine, five points on their driving record, and a 60-day suspension of their driver’s license.
