Dr. Elizabeth "Libby" Winton is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Winton specializes in the nonsurgical treatment of sports medicine injuries, such as knee and shoulder injuries, but also medical conditions in athletes and physically active individuals. She is also proficient in ultrasound, including applications in the musculoskeletal system.
Dr. Winton earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine where she played lacrosse and golf, serving as captain in both sports her senior year. She then graduated from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and then joined the faculty at MUSC after completing fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Greenville Health System Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. It was during fellowship that she served as a team physician for the North Greenville University an dConverse College athletic programs, the Greenville Drive minor league baseball team, USA Karate, and Travelers Rest High School in addition to covering multiple endurance events.
Dr. Winton splits her clinical time between the emergency department, sports medicine clinic, and event coverage. She enjoys treating athletes and performers of all levels. She has specific interest in emergent orthopedic/sports medicine conditions and injuries, ultrasound applications in sports medicine , and medical education. Dr. Winton frequently performs the following procedures: joint injections, ultrasound-guided joint injections, soft tissue,/bursal injections, trigger point injections, regenerative medicine injections (PRP platelet rich plasma, autologous blood, stem cells), diagnostic ultrasound, neural prolotherapy for knee osteoarthritis and other painful conditions, and exercise counseling and program design.
Dr. Winton also enjoys giving back to the community in other ways, including volunteering at One80 Place, Cares Clinic, and Habitat for Humanity.
