I am an artist/educator working in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My background is in fiber art but recently I began to combine fiber with printmaking and painting.
I create my artwork with a combination of media but mostly acrylic paint. Through painting transparent stenciled layers on wood panels or paper, I strive to create a perfect balance between subject and figure ground in order that all parts generate a powerful whole image. I stencil non-objective or geometric shapes over one another with the goal of viewing image through image, where the viewer can see other identifiable shapes or objects emerging from behind another image. This process is not fully an additive process, there are instances where I subtract or wipe away areas to reveal what is underneath.
I began this new body of work with layered stencil paintings in the fall of 2015. My original intent when I started this series was to decorate my classroom at Nova High School with borders. Thus the vertically inclined format but they never ended up on my wall at school because I liked what I was getting and kept them for myself while continuing to create more.
Over the last six months my work has evolved to include stitching and printing with stamps to achieve interesting textures, patterns or a focal point within the layers. This layering is intended to achieve deeper space, mystery, or add a mood or feeling to the work at the same time creating a holistic work of art.
