Happy National Smile Day!
Smile, it's free therapy.
Even though we weren’t able to walk together as a team, the crew at Elk Ridge proudly participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday!
National Assisted Living Week reminds us of all the people in our lives that know and practice #CaringIsEssential
The time is now! Caring is Essential #NALW
We love because we care. Caring is essential!
Happy National Chocolate-covered Pretzel Day
In the United States on October 6th, National German-American Day celebrates the German heritage millions of Americans claim.
This German-American heritage holiday commemorates the 13 German Mennonite families from Krefeld who landed in Philadelphia. On October 6, 1683, these families established the first German settlement in the original thirteen colonies. They named it Germantown.
Happy Do Something Nice Day!
National Grouch Day on October 15th sends out notices to all the grouches of the world to be their truest grouch. If you are a grouch today is your special day. According to Sesame Street Magazine, the day was created for all grouches to celebrate their way of life.
Sometimes grumps give backhanded compliments. “Your house looked horrible until you painted it.” Other times they don’t give them at all. Noise, silence, any general activity will make a grouch generally unpleasant.
As per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a grouch is described as:
• a person who complains frequently or constantly
• a habitually irritable or complaining person
It seems that a grouch may be happy (although they would never admit it) only when others are unhappy and grouchy. It is then that they feel most comfortable with having others share in their grumpy, cantankerous, surly world with them.
National Grouch Day would be a good time to send a grouch e-card and then ask a friend, whether they be a grouch or not, to come on over, sit back, share some popcorn, relax and watch the movie Grumpy Old Men!
“Let our hearts be full of both thanks and giving.”
In this uncertain time, we hope that you and yours remain safe and healthy. We are thankful not only today but every day for our incredible residents, staff, families, and community. ❤

Memory care is an important part about what we do here at JEA. Making sure that patients dealing with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or memory issues in general, have a long-term care plan is a priority for our doctors. We make sure that each resident has their own specific plan in place so that they can continue to enjoy their lives to the fullest. The aging process can be difficult for many people, but we are here to make it enjoyable and as easy as possible. Click on the link below to learn more about what we do to tailor to our residents!
Buying gifts for senior loved ones can be difficult when trying to figure out what will be most meaningful and useful in an assisted living home. Sometimes seniors who have downsized or recently moved into a living community, there won’t be as much space or room for decorations. If this is the case, some thoughtful, yet practical ideas to get for a loved one could be audiobooks, MP3 players with their favorite songs, or digital photo reels. These things cater to the needs of elderly loved ones, but don’t take up extra space and are still heartfelt.
The quality of assisted living can be very important when trying to choose the right care facility for one’s family member. At JEA we recognize this importance and offer top of the line care opportunities including bathing, dressing, and medication supervision. In addition, we offer shopping trips, sightseeing, and restaurant dining to our residents to ensure they get to live their best life for as long as possible. We want to make our residents feel as close to home as possible when they are transitioning to our assisted living and full-time care. To read more click the link below.

The holiday season can be filled with many different types of emotions, especially for seniors. These can be stressful times for people who can’t be with their loved ones or who have possibly already lost them. During these holiday times some helpful tips and tricks to staying upbeat and positive include, toasting to a loved one, lighting a memorial candle, or making a photo album of previous holidays that loved ones have been able to spend together. Doing these things allow seniors to think of the fond memories that have already been shared and look forward to the next opportunity for it to happen again!
Alzheimer’s education is especially important for kids who have grandparents or loved ones who have been diagnosed. This disease, or other forms of memory loss can be very tough for families to deal with, and seeing a loved one deteriorate as a young child is very hard to comprehend. Some tips for helping children understand and cope with this type of situation include being honest about it, keeping an open dialogue, and allowing these children to ask questions or handle their emotions the best way they see fit. Encouraging them to do things like watch old T.V. shows, singing to favorite songs, or looking at mementos together can also help jog memories for the loved one and make it easier for the child to understand. These things will alleviate some emotions and stress for both parties.

On December 27th, the Residents and employees at our North Ridge Alzheimer’s Specialty Care Center in Albuquerque, NM celebrated a monumental milestone when the first COVID-19 vaccines were administered at the JEA Senior Living COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic.
These first inoculations will be followed up in three weeks with the second dose to complete the series. Throughout the day, as vaccines were administered, an overwhelming wave of hope and joy-filled the clinic. These vaccines, which are +95% effective, are the best weapon we have against this deadly virus. JEA has launched an educational campaign to help inform our residents, families, and staff on the benefits and risks associated with the vaccine.
Similar vaccine clinics are being held in each of JEA’s communities with the hope of immunizing as many residents and staff as clinically appropriate.
Today there are more than 5.4 million people who suffer from Alzheimer’s and that number is constantly rising. Some tips to raise awareness for this disease include: educating family and loved one’s about the symptoms so it can be caught early, encouraging friends to wear purple, and raising money to help continue the funding for research to find a cure. By raising awareness and helping the cause, every day we become closer to finding the answer so that less people have to suffer!

Hospice is a vital source of care for elderly people even though the details of it can often get misconstrued. Hospice is often associated with high emotion and confusion, but it can be a valuable option that families do not explore because of the misconceptions that revolve around it. It needs to be understood that hospice is about caring instead of curing, and allowing patients with limited time to live their life journey with dignity and grace. In learning the best options for handling and understanding hospice, people are able to get the best care possible for the time they have left!
Veterans are an important part of our organization and what we do here at JEA. We recognize and appreciate the sacrifices these men and women have made for our country. We offer financial services to these people because sometimes elderly veterans struggle with affording the cost of senior living. We have partnered with the Elder Veterans Legal Group, P.C., which is a national law firm that helps assist veterans in handling the costs and benefits of senior living. We want veterans to know they deserve senior care in our facilities just as much as anyone else.
"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, "What are you doing for others?"
Today on #MLKDay, we reflect on Dr. King's positive impacts in #civilrights, #socialjustice, and all that he did to drive #equality through his life and actions.
Thank you, Dr. King, for your legacy of love and light"
It’s been an exciting day at Elk Ridge today. Residents and staff took part in the first round of the COVID-19 vaccine!
Our Administrator, Vince Daleiden, lead the way this morning with the first round of the COVID-19 vaccine at Elk Ridge!
The New Year can be exciting and full of well wishes, but can also be tedious to think about for seniors. It is important to remind loved ones that a new year is something to look forward to and celebrate. Some activities to help them with this could include writing down New Year’s resolutions or goals, starting a new planner or devotional, or engaging in conversation about what activities they could do in the New Year. Make sure to check in on loved ones during this time and create a positive experience for them with the coming New Year.
Alzheimer’s disease can be daunting to think about, but creating awareness about recognizing the signals or flags can be key to knowing how to help a loved one as much as possible. Some early signs to look for include short or long term memory loss, confusion, difficulty thinking logically, or shortened attention spans. If you notice a loved one experiencing some of these symptoms, it is important to get them checked out for their own health and safety. After speaking with your family physician, please reach out to your local JEA Senior Living community for more information and resources on senior living and memory care options.
Sometimes the day just calls for a double movie matinee with popcorn!
Seniors living independently can often run out of things to do during the winter months because it is too cold to go outside. There are still many things that a loved one can do during these months like dancing, swimming, games, and art. Field trips are also still an option during the winter and places like museums, indoor gardens, or book clubs are a good way to get a loved one out and about even when it’s cold. JEA offers many of these options to their residents all year round, and provides as much entertainment as possible when the outdoors is not an option.

Our Commitment to Getting Residents and Staff Vaccinated
At JEA Senior Living, we are committed to achieving the highest COVID-19 vaccination rates possible. We believe that the end of COVID-19 starts with us, as part of our All for One campaign.
To help us drive this message home and encourage widespread vaccinations for our residents and team members, we reached out to our friend and colleague, Fara Gold McLaughlin.
With over 30+ years of expertise in Senior Housing across roles in operations, marketing, sales, and management, Fara is a true expert and veteran in long-term-care.
Fara was gracious enough to lend her credibility and experience to our vaccination campaign, and even open up about her personal experience and diagnosis with dementia.

With the Covid-19 pandemic making it more difficult for loved ones to be able to visit their senior loved ones in Assisted Living, it makes it difficult not to feel lonely. Some ways to help entertain these loved ones during this time include video chatting, online messaging, or playing online games together. Phone calls can also be an easy way to make a loved one’s day. Remember to do these things to help alleviate some anxiety for them during these isolated months.
Mental health resources are important to be aware of for those that have senior loved ones. Young people are not the only ones who struggle with mental health, and it is helpful to know which resources to reach out to if someone needs assistance or advice. Whether it be general mental health, health issues related to dementia and Alzheimer’s, or issues due to anxiety and stress, there are many resources out there that can help. The staff and Residents LOVE to celebrate love! Happy Valentine’s Day from all of us at Elk Ridge!
Valentine’s Day is a day full of love, but can be a sad day for those who have lost loved ones or who cannot be with them. Some activities to engage in with your loved one at home include Valentine’s card decorating, reading poetry together, or enjoying a favorite romantic comedy. All of these are easy ways to make your loved one’s day and still enjoy the holiday. It will help remind them of just how much they are loved.
Today on National Caregivers Day, we take a moment to celebrate all of our #healthcareheroes and resident care teams. These individuals truly exemplify collaboration and compassion through their servant’s hearts.
Their selfless compassion, patience, understanding, and genuine care for each resident are just a few of the many reasons that we so appreciate our Caregivers at JEA Senior Living.
Thank you to each of our Caregivers for all that you do in #CaringTogether for your residents each day!
Make sure that you take a moment to thank the caregivers in your life today!

The warmer temperatures this week have all of us at Elk Ridge longing for spring, sunshine, and flowers in our hair!
It’s a nice feeling knowing our staff and residents have received their second dose of the covid vaccine!
Optimism can be key to living a longer and fuller life. Research now suggests that one’s attitude about enjoying life and mobility can lead to a longer life. It is important to remind loved one’s in assisted living communities to maintain an optimistic and active lifestyle, especially during the cold months where they cannot go outside as often. Doing so, will allow loved ones to maintain a healthier lifestyle for a longer period of time. Anything from group activities, to aerobics, to taking a walk around the facility to lead to better results.
Technology can provide a huge benefit to elderly people during their residence at an assisted care facility, and not just a phone. Gaming consoles that kids around the house don’t use like a Wii or a Nintendo Switch could offer many games and activities that loved ones could do without having to be mobile. The Nintendo Switch is a handheld device that has access to thousands of different games, and the Wii is a physically active gaming console that multiple people could play at the same time. These could not only provide entertainment, but it could allow bonding and team activities for seniors as well. If you have one of these consoles just sitting around at home, think about giving it to your loved one or donating it to an assisted living community.
While living in an assisted living community, it is still important to track your fitness. There are many different fitness trackers now that can be worn on the wrist, such as an Apple Watch or Fit Bit. These are easy ways to help track personal health metrics like diet, amount of exercise done, and sleep cycles. It also offers recommendations on how to stay active or how many steps are needed left in your day. Wearable fitness trackers could be a great way for senior loved ones to stay active and track their health.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the crew at Elk Ridge. We are LUCKY to serve our residents and their family.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
The internet can be a key resource to helping loved ones communicate inside and outside of their communities. Email, can be used for friends and family to communicate including pictures and videos.
Social Media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, offer an interactive approach and allow users to scroll through feeds of their friends posts or uploads. These are now great assets to seniors who live in our communities and allow them to communicate with loved ones wherever they are.
