Emerald’s Response to “Responsible Restart Ohio” Protocols
Please note that as of April 28th, ALL PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATION MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS AND THERAPY/COUNSELING APPOINTMENTS WILL CONTINUE TO BE DONE VIA TELEPSYCHIATRY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TMS TREATMENTS, WHICH WILL CONTINUE TO BE DONE IN OUR OFFICE.
Although some types of medical encounters/procedures will be “restarting” in the coming weeks, it has been made clear that any work that can be done remotely, should continue to be done remotely. Our patients have reported overwhelmingly positive responses to our telepsychiatry services. We will continue to practice recommended social/physical distancing at this time through telepsychiatry appointments, other than TMS treatments. Emerald will continue to monitor any changes in recommendations from the state of Ohio and will update as needed.
Please call us at 614-580-6917 or visit www.emeraldpsychiatry.com if you need to schedule an appointment.
Clinic studies show that the response rate to TMS therapy exceeds that of medication-based treatments. These studies were of patients who had not responded to multiple trials of antidepressant medications and psychotherapy.

Introduction to NeuroStar TMS Therapy®
“I had battled anxiety and depression since I was a teenager. Both were exacerbated following the birth of each of my children. I was severely depressed and had lost all desire and motivation to do things that once brought joy to my life. Every task, each day felt like nearly impossible to achieve. Getting out of bed was difficult. I wanted to avoid all life. After completing therapy, I’ve seen a true improvement in my severity of depression. I’ve started doing things I used to love doing again. I’ve found happiness again.”

Central Nervous System Stimulants, Suicide, Bipolar Disorder & ADHD:
Psychiatric research has explored the correlation between mental health conditions and the risk for suicide. Recently, studies have started to cast more light on this topic. Especially how the conditions of bipolar disorder and ADHD connect to suicide risk and central nervous system stimulants.
What are Central Nervous System (CNS) Stimulants?
Some people may not have heard of CNS stimulants so here is a brief description. These central nervous system medicines impact the body by increasing physical and mental processes. The substances will actually stimulate the human brain.

How to Overcome the Stigma of Mental Health Treatment:
Good medical treatment can transform people’s lives. But, when discussing mental health therapies, there is still a lingering stigma or feeling of shame that surrounds the illness. Some people may actually feel ashamed of their condition and choose not to seek treatment.
This is an attitude that is not beneficial or productive for achieving good mental health.

What is Low-Grade Depression or Dysthymia?
Dysthymia, or persistent depressive disorder, is a mental health condition that is often undetected and untreated. Dysthymia is a continuous long-term (chronic) or low-grade type of depression. Because of the nature of this mental health condition, people may not even realize that they have it.
Sometimes called high-functioning depression, it is estimated the approximately 1.5% of the U.S. adult population are affected by dysthymia. Roughly 50 percent of the cases are considered severe with 31 years old being the average age of onset.

Strategies for Overcoming Stress-Related Emotional Eating:
There is a real connection between people’s eating behavior and their state of mental wellness. How individuals think and view food can sometimes display mental health traits such as emotional eating and depression.
Eating is a necessary part of life. Often it is an action that is forgotten about and sometimes done automatically without much thought. The preparation and consumption of food is a central part of many traditions and celebrations. Yet, sometimes food is used to replace or ignore underlying emotional issues and feelings.
In these cases, individuals may engage in a behavior known as emotional or stress eating. Researchers have found that women who report high levels of stress may have a greater probability of displaying emotional eating type behavior.

Mental health is one of the biggest pandemic issues we'll face in 2021:
With progress in efforts for Covid-19 vaccines and predictions for when the population will receive them, there seems to be a light at the end of the long, harrowing pandemic tunnel.
As the physical risks are better managed with vaccines, however, what will likely still remain is the indelible impact of the pandemic weighing on the collective psyche.
