In celebration of Black History Month, today we spotlight Janet Collins. In 1951, she became the first black prima ballerina to dance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House as a permanent member of the Metropolitan Opera. Despite her talent, she was replaced by understudies while the company toured in the south. After leaving the company in 1954, she devoted her life to teaching dance. She passed away in 2003.

In celebration of Black History Month, today we spotlight William Henry Lane also known as Master Juba. He is credited as one of the most influential figures in the creation of American tap dance becoming the father of tap. During the 1840’s, he was one of the first black performers for white audiences. He was also the first black dancer to tour with the all-white Ethiopian Minstrels. Although he was labeled as the “Greatest Dancer in the World,” he still had to perform in blackface with the other white dancers. He passed away in 1852.

In celebration of Black History Month, today we spotlight Pearl Primus who was a dancer, choreographer, activist, and an anthropologist. Intending to become a physician, Primus received a degree in biology and premedical sciences from Hunter College in 1940. Primus sought employment at a laboratory but was deterred by racial discrimination. She was later hired in the dance unit of the National Youth Administration and soon received a scholarship from the New Dance Group, where she studied modern dance. In 1948 Primus received a federal grant to study dance, and used the money to travel around Africa and the Caribbean to learn different styles of native dance, which she then brought back to the United States to perform and teach. She also choreographed dances that contained messages about racism and discrimination. One of her dances, Strange Fruit, was a protest against the lynching of blacks. She passed away in 1994.
This week’s shout out is to Tiffany Erickson. At age 7, Tiff began dancing at En Avant. She eventually danced professionally with several companies and earned degrees in dance and psychology before returning to En Avant as a sought after teacher.  Tiffany ignites her students’ hearts for the art by infusing her own joy for dance with more than two decades of teaching and performance experience.  Her classes blend knowledge and technique with experience and high expectations to provide students with unsurpassed instruction. In celebration of Black History Month, today we spotlight John Bubbles. He was a jazz tap dancer, singer, pianist, and the father of rhythm. At the age of ten, he teamed with six-year-old Ford Lee "Buck" Washington in an act billed as "Buck and Bubbles." Bubbles sang while Buck played the piano while standing. It was not long before they were playing engagements in Louisville, Detroit and New York City. At the age of 18, Bubbles focused on dancing after his voice changed. The two performed an act in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1931 and became the first black artists to perform in New York’s acclaimed Radio City Music Hall. Bubbles, who is best known for his performance in George Gershwin’s 1935 production Porgy and Bess, later went on to perform in Harlem’s famous Hoofers Club, which led to Broadway gigs and opportunities in Hollywood. He is said to be the first dancer to fuse jazz dance with tap, creating off-beats and in turn, altered accents, phrasing and timing revolutionizing tap. He passed away in 1986.

Today we recognize assistant Molly Koch. An active music student at Central High School, Molly has been dancing since she was 3; taking and enjoying all styles of dance. A tough year of Covid19 shutdowns and an injury that kept her out of the 2020 performance helped her recognize her passion for dance. “Dancing lifts me up when I’m down, it makes me feel happy!" Molly assists with ballet 1 class.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, today we spotlight Martha Graham. She was a modern dancer and choreographer whose technique changed dance worldwide. Martha studied dance for over ten years at the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts. In 1926, she opened up the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance where she was determined to strip dancing down to the fundamental aspect of movement. Her principle technique became known as “Contraction and Release,” which was the basis for her weighted and grounded style in direct contrast of classical ballet. Each movement could be used to express negative or positive emotion depending on the placement of the head. She also added the spiral shape to incorporate the sense of fluidity. Martha was the first dancer to perform at the White House where she performed for the Roosevelts in 1937. She continued to choreograph until her death in 1991. #WomensHistoryMonth #enavantdancestudio #exploreyourpassionfordance #enavantwy

In celebration of Women’s History Month, today we spotlight Josephine Baker. She is known as a successful performer, World War II spy, and activist. Josephine’s parents were both entertainers from St. Louis, Missouri, and they would often bring her up on stage during their shows throughout the segregated Midwest. Their careers never really took off, and at the age of 15, she ran off to perform with the African American theatre troupe. She eventually moved to New York City and at age 19, she toured the United States with The Jones Family Band and The Dixie Steppers, performing various comical skits. A few years later her success took her to Paris where her career thrived due to her distinct dancing and unique costumes. Josephine became the most photographed woman in the world and by 1927, she earned more money than any entertainer in Europe. In 1936, she returned to the United States to star in Ziegfeld Follies which proved to be disastrous. American audiences rejected the idea of a black woman with so much sophistication and power. She returned to Europe and assisted France during World War II. Josephine used her celebrity status to capture information for the French Resistance. She also housed resistance fighters in her chateau. She would later return to the United States to perform and to fight segregation and racism. She refused to perform for segregated audiences and she adopted 12 children from various countries. In 1963, she spoke at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. She remained on stage late into her life until her death in 1975. Her career illustrates how entertainers can use their platforms to change the world. #WomensHistoryMonth #enavantdancestudio #exploreyourpassionfordance #enavantwy

Grace has studied modern, ballet, tap, hip hop, jazz, cheer, and Ariel hoop. When colleges open again, Grace will attend the California Institute of Art with a specialization in scenic design. 🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 In celebration of Women’s History Month, today we spotlight Isadora Duncan known as the “mother of modern dance.” Her mother Dora was a first generation Irish American and raised Isadora along with her three siblings as a single mother in Oakland, California. Dora supported the family by giving piano lessons while Isadora and her sister Elizabeth taught dance. Isadora rejected the rigidness of classical ballet and called it a “living death,” so she based her dancing on more natural rhythm and movement. At age 18, she moved to Chicago and caught the eye of Augustin Daly, who brought her to New York City. After two years of performing for his road company, mostly playing fairies, she quit and hopped on a steamer to London. She was in search of an artistic climate and in a short amount of time she became a cult figure. Her and her brother Raymond studied Greek mythology which would transform her general style of movement as an artist. Barefoot and dressed in sheaths inspired by Greek imagery, she would dance in the homes of the financially elite before becoming a major success in Budapest, Hungary in 1902. In 1903 in Berlin, she gave her most famous speech on the future of dance and predicted dance would be for the “free spirit...whose body and soul have grown so harmoniously together.” Isadora’s style of dance was controversial in its time but it wasn’t long before women were dancing barefoot in crowded theatres and concert halls throughout Europe. She toured widely and founded dance schools in Germany, Russia, and the United States, though none of them survived. Her ideas were too advance for their time and she was the object of attack by the less broad-minded. However, she helped pave the way for the acceptance of modern dance and one of the first to raise interpretive dance to the status of creative art. She passed away in 1927. #WomensHistoryMonth #enavantdancestudio #exploreyourpassionfordance #enavantwy
This week’s recognition is for Heather Hansen. Heather started dancing at age 4 at Tova’s Classical Ballet Theatre School and continued her passion for dance, working and performing with Colorado Ballet, Jillana (former principal with New York City Ballet), Peter Pucci, Moscow Ballet, Ballet West, and Patricia Tate, Marsha Knight, & General McArthur Hambrick (professors from The University of Wyoming) and dancing as a principle dancer with Ballet Wyoming and Reformation Dance.  Heathers two decades of teaching experience enhances her enjoyment of passing on her love of dance to her students.  Heather is currently teaching Pointe 3, Ballet 7 and Lyrical/Contemporary 3.  Heather also runs Onpointedesigns and runs the dance studio’s website and designs the logos. For more information about Heather, please visit our website at https://www.enavantwy.com/teachers. #enavantdancestudio #exploreyourpassionfordance #enavantwy
In celebration of Women’s History Month, today we spotlight Alicia Alonso who was a prima ballerina, dance instructor and choreographer. In 1921, Alicia Martinez was born in Cuba and was introduced to ballet through debutante classes at Havana’s Sociedad Pro-Arte Musical. Since Cuba was going through a rough economical time, pointe shoes were scarce and like Cinderella, Alicia’s feet were the only one’s that could fit in them. At age 15, she fell in love and married dancer Fernando Alonso and adopted the stage name Alicia Alonso. In 1937, they moved to New York City to continue their dance training. Alicia danced at the School of American Ballet with some of the best private teachers of classical ballet. In 1937, she made her first professional debut in Broadway shows Great Lady and Stars in Your Eyes as a chorus girl. She then joined the American Ballet Caravan as a soloist. In 1940, her and Fernando joined Ballet Theatre later renamed American Ballet Theatre. At the young age of 19, she began running into things and starting losing her vision in one eye. She returned back to Cuba to have three surgeries for a detached retina and was immobilized for one year. Fernando would help her memorize her roles marking them with her fingers while her eyes were bandaged closed. By 1943, they would both be back on stage in New York City. Alicia lacked peripheral vision, so a wire was often placed on stage to keep her from falling into the orchestra pit and lights were strategically placed on the stage as well to assist in marking her place. In 1948, she headed back to Cuba to open up her own dance company. Because of lack of funding, it folded in 1956. In 1957, she was the first Western dancer to be invited to perform in the Soviet Union. In 1959, after Castro became into power, Fernando was able to negotiate funding for the company. The funding created the National Ballet of Cuba which was the first school and professional dance company in Cuba. To recruit dancers, Alicia would have a small group perform for farms, factories and military bases. She also looked for male dancers in orphanages and gave free tuition to dancers with potential. The company landed touring gigs in South and Central America and Europe. Alicia would guest perform with her troupe but was rarely seen in America due to Eisenhower cutting off diplomatic ties with Cuba. She would later return to perform in America as restrictions eased. She would dance with the company well into her 70’s even after her eyesight continued to deteriorate. She did not want her blindness to define her. She gave her last public performance in 1995 and she passed away in 2019. Her ballet school and company she lead for 71 years introduced Cuban dance to the world and created a unique Cuban ballet style which is recognized globally. US dance companies have benefited from adding Cuban-trained dancers to their rosters and adding Cuban-trained instructors. #WomensHistoryMonth #enavantdancestudio #exploreyourpassionfordance #enavantwy
