An ATV accident left 19-year-old Evan Deisch of Cincinnati, Ohio, with a severe traumatic head injury, aneurysm, broken face, a broken jaw and a ruptured aorta. After being airlifted then treated at a trauma center, he was transferred to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital at Norwood to help him return to walking, playing the guitar and fishing.
Forming a close relationship with him in a time of COVID-19 visitor restrictions, his therapist Healy even took on the role of barber and gave him a haircut during his stay.

Veronica Brown was sent to Encompass Health after a month on a ventilator battling COVID-19. However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing.
The testing revealed a new, post-COVID-19 diagnosis for Brown, Guillain-Barre syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the nerves that may cause temporary paralysis and is often triggered by a viral infection. See how our team helped Veronica get back on her feet.

Encompass Health employees at both the Drake and Norwood locations in Cincinnati partnered with the Salvation Army to sponsor an Angel Tree. Fifty children in the community received gifts from their wish lists. Over 70 bags of toys, clothing and bedding were collected and donated.

Meet our new CNO!
Melissa Samuelson has recently accepted the chief nursing officer position for Encompass Health Cincinnati at both the Drake and Norwood locations. Melissa holds a doctorate of nursing practice in addition to a master's and bachelor's degree in nursing. She was recently the vice president and chief nursing officer for two acute care hospitals in the Cincinnati area. Melissa has over 20 years experience as a chief nursing executive for both large and small hospital systems and over 30 years of diverse nursing experience. We welcome Melissa to our Encompass Health Cincinnati team!

It can be hard to tell what is season allergies and what is COVID-19. Do you know what symptoms they share and what symptoms are different?
Sharee Lewis RN, ADN, has been promoted to nurse manager for our Encompass Health Drake campus. She recently held supervisory and interim nurse manger positions for Encompass Health. Sharee began her career as a LPN in skilled nursing facilities, and after getting her RN degree, worked on a pre- and post-orthopedic unit in an acute care hospital. She comes to Encompass health with a wealth of knowledge in both acute and post-acute settings.
Shelly Geis has been promoted to nurse manager for our Encompass Health Norwood campus. She has both degrees in nursing and respiratory therapy and has over 20 years of healthcare experience. She recently held supervisory and interim nurse manager positions for Encompass Health. Prior to coming to Encompass Health, Shelly was a staff nurse on a transitional care unit at an acute care hospital and held management positions in respiratory therapy departments.
By the second week in the hospital battling COVID-19 and pneumonia, Lafayette Johnson’s lungs collapsed, and his kidneys were shutting down. He had to be placed on a ventilator. By the fourth week, he had a heart attack and was placed on a second life support. When he finally woke up, he was extremely weak.
“COVID-19 devastated every muscle in my body, and I was in a hospital bed for five months,” he said. “I lost 57 pounds and wasn’t even able to stand up. I didn’t give up—even after dying twice. I came back.”

Encompass Health hosted a dog walk to raise funds for the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association's annual heart walk. Although the heart walk was virtual this year, employees of Encompass Health paraded their dogs around the hospital campus to cheer up patients. The team raised $250 for heart disease and stroke research.
