Happy New Year!
Lafayette Johnson describes his near-death experiences with COVID-19, and how Encompass Health Cypress helped him regain his strength and his life after his long battle with the virus.
"On July 8th I was admitted to the hospital because I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t have a temperature, but I had a bad headache and had lost my sense of taste and had leg cramps. The nurse said that I had pneumonia and COVID.
"By the second week, both my lungs collapsed, my kidneys started to shut down, and I was intubated and put on a ventilator. By the fourth week, I needed to be put on a second life support. I also had a heart attack. The doctors said I died twice while undergoing procedures.
"I finally woke up in late September, and physically I lost all my strength. COVID 19 had devastated every muscle in my body. I was transferred to Encompass Health Cypress to get stronger. When I first arrived, I wasn’t able to stand and they needed two people just to help me transfer.
"On discharge, I was able to walk 150 feet using a rolling walker and was able to transfer on my own. Thank God for all the wonderful people who helped me recover and got me to where I am now. "
Happy holidays from Encompass Health. Wishing you health, happiness and peace this season.
