Veronica Brown was sent to Encompass Health after a month on a ventilator battling COVID-19. However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing.
The testing revealed a new, post-COVID-19 diagnosis for Brown, Guillain-Barre syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the nerves that may cause temporary paralysis and is often triggered by a viral infection. See how our team helped Veronica get back on her feet.

It can be hard to tell what is season allergies and what is COVID-19. Do you know what symptoms they share and what symptoms are different?
By the second week in the hospital battling COVID-19 and pneumonia, Lafayette Johnson’s lungs collapsed, and his kidneys were shutting down. He had to be placed on a ventilator. By the fourth week, he had a heart attack and was placed on a second life support. When he finally woke up, he was extremely weak.
“COVID-19 devastated every muscle in my body, and I was in a hospital bed for five months,” he said. “I lost 57 pounds and wasn’t even able to stand up. I didn’t give up—even after dying twice. I came back.”

One patient's COVID-19 recovery | Encompass Health
The S.T.O.P. Cops were out in full force searching for offenders of our safe mobility program. This program utilizes protocols to safely transfer patients to reduce the chance of an injury to our patients as well as our clinicians.
Kathy, case manager at our hospital, smiles as she receives the first COVID-19 vaccine administered at Desert Canyon. Staff will have the option to receive the vaccine to help stop the spread of this virus and welcome in a healthier and safer new year.

In honor of Dr. King, take time today to reflect on his life of service and his teachings, which inspire us to serve others with a compassionate heart.

Last week, Gene came to Desert Canyon after a lengthy battle with COVID-19. His journey at the acute care hospital had its ups and downs, but he finally made it to Encompass Health more motivated than ever to get back home.
Gene's case manager said he had a big goal to walk out of rehabilitation in one week, so he could return home to his family. Here is Gene hitting that goal and heading home! Way to go, Gene!
