Physical Therapist Stephanie Alexander was inspired by patient Dale Smith’s trust in his therapy team and his willingness to help fellow patients while he at Encompass Health Morgantown. “Dale came to Encompass Health following a stroke that significantly impaired both his arm and leg, which affected all of his basic mobility," Stephanie said. "He had a little different path to recovery than most of our patients, as he chose to discharge home directly from the hospital and attempt "rehabbing" himself. After a few days being home, he realized if he wanted to be able to return to his prior level of function and lifestyle, he was going to need more specialized help. "Dale trusted his therapists fully and strived daily to not only meet, but exceed, our and his personal expectations. Dale not only pushed himself do to better and work harder, but helped other patients believe in themselves and do the same. For these reasons, we are honoring Dale Smith with the title of Rehab Champion.”
Zack came to rehab following a dirt bike accident resulting in a spinal cord injury. He worked hours on hours to accomplish everything we asked of him. Although he had to learn how to do everything all over again, he didn't back down from the challenge. Toward the end of his stay, we wanted to show him that he is still able to do the things he did prior to the accident, so we planned a community outing to Outback with his family (pre-COVID-19) to get him better prepared to go home. We are happy to say that Zack has not stopped his rehab and is continuing to work hard in outpatient! Keep up the hard work and congratulations on being named a rehab champion.
What a week this team has had discovering the possibilities. The staff and patients golfed, fished, hiked, camped, planted trees and today had a good old fashion Mountaineer tailgate. In the words of John Denver, National Rehab Awareness Week and Camp MountainView at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Morgantown and MountainView at Bridgeport have been “Almost Heaven!”
Former patient Hana Cooley was nominated as a rehab champion by her therapy team due to her hard work and dedication to return to college and work after a motor vehicle accident. Hana was able to return home with her parents assistance, and is now living in her own apartment and working while being a college student. “Her motivation to ‘get her life back’ was inspiring and what led me to nominate her as a rehab champion,” said Pam Geary-Bell, Hana’s occupational therapist. Congratulations, Hana! We are so proud that we were able to help you to discover the possibilities after a traumatic event in your life! Thank you for choosing Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Morgantown.

"Sherri Sisson is a remarkable lady that we had the pleasure of working with her after she suffered a traumatic accident. Sherri can tell her story best, but what she doesn't mention is the incredible attitude, work ethic, resilience and strength she demonstrated while at Encompass Health. Sherri pushed herself during therapy sessions past our expectations and always came down to the therapy gym with a smile on her face. Each small victory, celebrated with high fives and hugs, allowed her to reach her ultimate goal of returning home. Sherri's kind heart, tough spirit and drive is why is she a true rehab champion." -Lindsay Rowand, physical therapist, and Katy Ainsworth, occupational therapist In the video below, Sherri tells her story in her own words. The video contains graphic images of wounds that may be disturbing for some viewers.

We are so proud of her perseverance to keep working hard in order to return home independently.

Technology Tuesday! Terri has been working hard and progressing wonderfully toward independence with activities of daily living as part of her stroke rehabilitation. She is working on higher level balance and coordination activities in occupational therapy using the Dynavision D2 Vision Training System. When using Dynavision, Terri stands on a balance pad and pushes buttons as they light up across the board. This is helping to improve her balance, awareness, coordination, motor skills, processing and reaction time. These skills will help her continue to improve her functional mobility, self-care tasks and household management as she works toward her ultimate goal of going back to work as a nurse. Great work, Terri!

Technology Tuesday! John suffered an incomplete spinal cord injury during an ATV accident that affected all four of his limbs. John has been working very hard in occupational therapy with Jacob, OT, and Cameron, OTS, with his Saebo Flex splint to help regain his hand function. In physical therapy with Karly, John is now up on his feet and learning to walk again with the help of our LiteGait technology. This device allows our patients to feel safe and supported while the therapists focus on other aspects of walking. This piece of equipment is typically used when a patient requires an increased amount of assistance and is in the early stages of relearning to walk. John has improved significantly since his admission. Keep an eye on our Facebook page to watch his progress and cheer him on.

However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing. Patients suffering from a variety of injuries or deficits, including stroke and spinal cord injury, can greatly benefit from aquatic therapy. Brian, who suffered a spinal cord injury as the result of an ATV accident, is able to take advantage of the buoyancy that water provides so that he can complete exercises in a standing position with minimal assistance from his therapy team. The water’s hydrostatic pressure helps increase circulation and decrease swelling, while the water’s warmth helps relax tone and relieve pain. We utilize several techniques to help our patients achieve functional gains as they work hard toward their goals.

This technology is a sophisticated treadmill device that uses the therapeutic concept of body weight-supported ambulation and robotics to help patients with gait disorders. The AutoAmbulator is designed to safely place patients in a standing position while robotics, along with the manual assistance of therapists, assist the patient’s legs to walk on a treadmill. The therapists continuously monitor walking patterns, changing the device’s power and speed according to the patient’s ability. Keep up the great work, Steve! #TechnologyTuesday
