Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise presents our version of bobbing for apples during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. This COVID friendly version was called “Reaching for Apples” and tested our interdisciplinary teams’ skills using adaptive equipment. The competition promoted increase hand-eye coordination, gross motor control and functional reaching for activities of daily living. This was a great team engagement and sensitivity training for all. This year’s winner of the most apples “reached” in one minute from the barrel of water was Lauren Leiva, OTR team leader, who was cheered on by Celina Gonzalez, lead rehabilitation technician.

For Halloween, therapy operations celebrated like zoo animals in the crazy jungle of 2020!
John Hartnett suffered multiple strokes and was in a coma for about a month before being admitted to Encompass Health for comprehensive rehabilitation. He arrived unable to walk independently, move his right arm, perform self-care, talk or eat and drink. At discharge, he had made great progress towards his goals of mobility and self-care. However, continued to require a tube in his stomach for nutrition and hydration. He continued with outpatient therapy and has now regained his mobility and ability to eat and drink. John now enjoys eating his favorite foods, spending time with his family, singing his favorite songs and dancing with his wife in preparation for their son’s upcoming wedding.

Jacyln Grill, speech language pathologist, is showing two thumbs up as a sign of a patients' accomplishment after performing a Modified Barium Swallow Assessment. Modified barium swallow assessments are specifically aimed at evaluating the swallowing process in individuals who have difficulty swallowing food without inhaling it into the windpipe. X-rays may be taken of specific abnormalities, and the entire test may be recorded for later viewing. This test was performed at our hospital, where Jackie was able to advance her patient from being able to eat nothing by mouth to an oral diet, something he had not been unable to do for months! Even better, she was able to have a dinner date with his family that same evening! Leon, 91, was diagnosed with metabolic acidosis and acute renal failure due to bilateral hydronephrosis. New to dialysis and a pacemaker, Leon was motivated to participate in three hours of therapy to get back to doing the things he loves. Leon uses the Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS) to challenge and assess his physical, visual, auditory and cognitive abilities. He taps on moving numbers in order to work on visual scanning, pursuit, sequencing and standing tolerance. His occupational therapist, Jesley Centeno-Nieves, and OT doctoral intern Lauren Villar provided contact guard assist and visual cues. Working on these skills will help him follow recipes for cooking, which he loves to do, once he's back at home.
After surviving COVID-19, Michelle Williams was admitted to Encompass Health Sunrise to regain her strength and independence from her prolonged ICU stay. Upon admission she required total assistance for all mobility and activities of daily living. During her stay, she progressed to walking unassisted and is independent with her activities of daily living! She participated in our recent video to support World Stroke Day to show off her dancing skills and is a true success story on our “Wall of Success” with her Physical Therapist Ronna Ross, Physical Therapy Assistant Malcolm Botes and Speech Language Pathologist Melissa Magram! Albert Ziemba, 88, was admitted to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Sunrise on October with severe chronic dysphagia, a swallowing disorder that made it impossible for Albert to eat food by mouth any longer. He had to be placed on a feeding tube. See how Speech Language Pathologist Shoshana Bielich used advanced technologies to evaluate Albert's swallow and work with him to eat once again.
Mauro Pinera came to Encompass Health Sunrise after suffering a traumatic brain injury from a bicycle accident. After three craniotomies (removal of the skull) and surgical complications requiring him be placed on a ventilator, Mauro was admitted to Encompass Health for comprehensive rehabilitation. Mauro had severe cognitive-communication deficits that included difficulty understanding and expressing language, and he was unable to walk and perform everyday activities such as dressing, bathing and being able to get in and out of bed and chairs. By discharge, Mauro was able to walk, perform everyday activities for self-care and was able to communicate and understand basic information.

Veronica Brown was sent to Encompass Health after a month on a ventilator battling COVID-19. However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing. The testing revealed a new, post-COVID-19 diagnosis for Brown, Guillain-Barre syndrome, an inflammatory disorder of the nerves that may cause temporary paralysis and is often triggered by a viral infection. After hip surgery, Susan Heiman used the Universal Gym with her occupational therapist to strengthen her upper body and increase balance and weight bearing on her right leg. She was discharged this week after great progress, and we wish her the best of luck on her continued recovery!

By the second week in the hospital battling COVID-19 and pneumonia, Lafayette Johnson’s lungs collapsed, and his kidneys were shutting down. He had to be placed on a ventilator. By the fourth week, he had a heart attack and was placed on a second life support. When he finally woke up, he was extremely weak. “COVID-19 devastated every muscle in my body, and I was in a hospital bed for five months,” he said. “I lost 57 pounds and wasn’t even able to stand up.
