As a partial paraplegic, Hamza relies on his arms and upper body to navigate daily life. The 46-year-old came to our hospital to regain strength in his arms and neck after a second back surgery. In therapy, he did a variety of exercises focused on gaining strength. He is quite quick with his wheelchair, and spends much of his downtime zooming around the courtyard trying to set new time records. Every month, since June, TMC for Seniors has been conducting a drive by activity where seniors sign up to pick up an activity kit at Encompass Health. What’s so great for all of these individuals, is that this drive by arrangement gives them the chance to get out of the house and receive kits with games, readings and activities. Our occupational therapists led a fun Zumba chair class for our patients. Class began with warm ups including shoulder rolls, deep breathing, rowing extensions, foot circles and so much more. These same warm ups can be used at home to help start the day. Patients then learned movements to get their body active! They learned arm, leg and upper body movements to go along with a song's melody!

Veronica Brown was sent to Encompass Health after a month on a ventilator battling COVID-19. However, after arriving, her limited mobility prompted her doctor to send her back to the hospital for neurological testing. Jose Felix had been hospitalized since November. His family has five children and had been greatly impacted by his hospitalization. While he was at our hospital, our case management team brought together employees to help the Felix family through these hard times. We were proud to have been able to help the Felixes provide Christmas gifts for their family and get some needed household items this year. We wish Jose the best in his continued recovery!
By the second week in the hospital battling COVID-19 and pneumonia, Lafayette Johnson’s lungs collapsed, and his kidneys were shutting down. He had to be placed on a ventilator. By the fourth week, he had a heart attack and was placed on a second life support. When he finally woke up, he was extremely weak. “COVID-19 devastated every muscle in my body, and I was in a hospital bed for five months,” he said. “I lost 57 pounds and wasn’t even able to stand up. Ramon is working to improve his cardiovascular endurance, mobility, strength and independence. His goal is to return home and improve his physical condition, so he can undergo a heart procedure. In occupational therapy, he practiced sitting to standing exercises, utilizing the arm bike and tried out shaving with the clippers. He got to enjoy a therapy activity where he used the reacher, to reach for bean bags and then toss them at that bean bag points board. Ramon is looking forward to get back to his dog, Sandy, and making some home-cooked meals!
