There are 3 types of valleys that roofers do. We do the “no shortcuts” style that has metal in it with a “W” bend in the middle to facilitate water management for our high precipitation climate. Under the metal valley, we put a rubberized membrane casually referred to as “ice and water”. Above the valley is starter strips and shingles. This 4-part system is recommended for valleys of more than just a few feet due to high volume in Wisconsin’s high precipitation climate. This is even more important on the north side of steep roofs which take longer to dry out. If your roofer only used one or two of these components, did the pass along the savings or pocket the difference at your expense? Which do you have?

Sometimes we run into problems that take a lot longer than expected, like this repair if rotten deck boards and torn shingles. Yes, those are carpenter ants and eggs in the photos. Another contractor tried to tell this couple that they just needed gutters.

This is an asbestos slate tile roof. Asbestos roofing cannot be repaired. While asbestos slate is a very durable product, known to last 60 or 70 years or more, when the tiles start to go, that’s the end of the roof. As a cancer causing substance, we don’t remove these roofs as they require special certifications. But by knowing what you have on your roof, you can be better prepared to plan for its eventual replacement. In the end, knowledge is power and educating yourself about differences will allow you to plan for as better project.

It’s a bright and sunny day and this customer loves her new roof and gutters. Despite the Covid related shortages of building materials, we got her the color she wanted. Happy days!
Getting water in your home? It’s probably ice damming. Don’t panic. Don’t spend money that won’t solve your problem. Don’t scrape your roofing granules off if your roof in a frantic exercise to stop water infiltration. Be patient. Spring is right around the corner. Understanding what is making your house cold can be an eye opening experience when you consider all elements of a build or remodel. In this case, the customer was considering a large remodel that would have included ripping out ceiling drywall, but aside from some challenges from thermal bridging, the problems weren’t that bad compared to a very inefficient, very large window. Our recommendation in this case, improve the obvious big problem before tackling the minutia.
