Believe it or not! Human eyes are so sensitive that under ideal conditions, one could see the light from a single candle up to 30 miles away.
If your pre-operation eye exam reveals that your cornea is too thin, your doctor may not clear you for LASIK surgery. This doesn’t mean, however, that you’re out of options as you may still be able to undergo the less invasive PRK procedure.
If you’re considering getting your eyes surgically corrected, you’re going to want to get the job done right. This means that you should avoid unknown clinics offering cut-rate prices and deal only with a vision correction facility that’s very well established.
Before you opt for laser vision correction, you’re going to want to do some independent research to see if it will be worth your while. Risks in particular (every surgical procedure has them) should be discussed with your doctor and carefully considered before you commit to the operation.
Do you know that more than 50% of the cortex, the surface of the brain, is dedicated to processing visual information? The visual cortex is located in the occipital lobe.
Laser vision correction was made possible due to the efforts of Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer. In 1950, he developed the keratome knife for performing keratomileusis (cutting the flap of the cornea) for vision correction.
Smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs; it can harm your eyes as well. Smoking increases your risk of diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration and it can harm the optic nerve.
Did you know that older LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) machines make use of a blade? This instrument—a microkeratome—is used to cut a hinged flap in the cornea which is put back in place after the laser has done its work.
What are some of the pros of LASIK surgery? For starters, recovery from LASIK is significantly faster than PRK. Typically, patients undergoing LASIK can see vision improvements within hours and they should be fully recovered a few days after the procedure.
One of the more common side effects of getting LASIK surgery done is dry eyes. As such, it’s important to carefully consider this drawback and get your doctor’s opinion before you commit to getting the surgery.
According to statistics, 39 million people in the world are blind. Fortunately, 80% of vision problems are preventable by eating a nutritious diet and following a healthy lifestyle.
How does one prepare for the LASIK surgery? Eat a light meal on the scheduled day and take all of your prescribed medications. Avoid wearing eye makeup or heavy hair accessories which might interfere with your head position when under the laser.
Do you know that even if no one in the past few generations of your family had blue or green eyes, these recessive traits can still appear in later generations?
Good eye health begins with good nutrition. Studies have shown that nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help protect against age-related vision problems like cataracts and macular degeneration.

When can you drive after laser vision correction? You may start driving as soon as you are able to see well enough. Ask someone to drive you home on the day of LASIK or PRK surgery.
It’s not generally recommended to fly for 2 to 3 days after laser vision correction. This is due to the dry atmosphere inside an airplane. When you do fly, make sure you use plenty of artificial tears.
Before laser eye surgery, your eye care practitioner will give you a comprehensive eye exam to make sure your eyes are healthy. They will also electronically map your eye to plan your surgery for the most precise results possible.
What vision problems can be resolved through LASIK or PRK? Either vision correction method can be used to correct a wide range of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism (an irregular eye shape that causes blurry vision).
