Today is National Penicillin Allergy Day, an annual celebration to raise awareness around the impact of carrying a penicillin allergy label and how it affects a patient’s healthcare treatment. It focuses on the importance of knowing a patient’s true allergy history while offering tools, activities, and ideas to help create penicillin allergy awareness throughout healthcare offices, facilities, and communities. Visit ENT and Allergy Associates to have a consultation with one of our board-certified allergists. At ENT and Allergy Associates, our board-certified allergists / immunologists are physicians who are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric and adult allergic diseases and immune deficiencies. Our allergists work hand-in-hand with our ENT specialists to provide patients with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical care. Many of the common disorders that are treated by the ear, nose and throat specialist are complications of allergic disease. Our ENT and allergy physicians work together as a team to provide faster diagnosis and comprehensive treatment so that patients benefit from this close collaboration.
Did you also know that decreased hearing sensitivity reduces cues for environmental awareness? Research has shown that hearing loss may also be a risk factor for falls, which happens to be a huge public health concern! Even mild hearing loss is associated with 3x greater risk of falls. Amplification (which has been shown to improve quality of life) may help those stay alert, aware, and balanced!!! Staying healthy and safe at home includes preventing falls! (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2012; National Council on Aging, 2020). If you have concerns about your hearing and/or balance, make sure to call today to make an appointment to be seen by one of our ENTs and audiologists! #NationalFallPreventionAwarenessDay #FallPrevention #FallPreventionAwareness #HealthyHearing
🤧ALLERGIES OCCUR IN THE FALL TOO! While many people associate allergies with the spring season, the fall is also a common time of the year to have allergy symptoms. But sometimes it can be tricky trying to distinguish allergy from the common cold which frequently occurs this time of the year. Although colds and seasonal allergies may share some of the same symptoms, they are very different. If you suspect you may have allergies, or if you are still not sure, an allergist at ENTA can help make an accurate diagnosis and come up with an effective treatment plan…even if you feel you’ve tried every allergy medication! To schedule a visit with an Allergist give us a call at 1-855-ENTA-DOC or book online at ENTADOC.com. We’re here to help you feel better!
Did you know that migraines are one of the most debilitating chronic disorders in the US?! In fact, about 40% of migraine patients have some accompanying vestibular syndrome involving disruption in their balance and/or dizziness, which is often more persistent and debilitating than the underlying headache. Treatment for this disorder may include medications, vestibular rehabilitation, and lifestyle modifications (VeDA, 2020). If you experience the symptoms outlined above, make sure to call us to schedule an appointment with one of our ENTs!

Another common vestibular disorder is Meniere’s disease, which is a chronic inner ear disease that typically affects only one ear. Meniere’s disease can occur at any age, but is found to be more common during middle-aged adulthood. Meniere’s disease can present with unpredictable episodes and lead to fluctuating hearing sensitivity. As seen in the list above, Meniere’s patients typically suffer from 4 classical symptoms: hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Unfortunately, this disease can unexpectedly interrupt one’s lifestyle, causing fatigue and stress (Mayo Clinic, 2020). If you have experience any of the above symptoms, make sure to schedule an appointment with one of our ENTs! #balanceawarenessweek #vestibulardisorders
@craigzalvan ENTA’s very own, Dr. Craig Zalvan, has written and edited an outstanding new book on the diagnosis and treatment of reflux, both Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) and Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) with a focus on treatment using a plant-based, Mediterranean-style diet! This text comprehensively reviews the current state of the art in Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) together with a comprehensive explanation and description of the known gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) literature. With chapters written by experts from around the world, this text aims to deliver what is current in reflux recognition, diagnosis, reflux related complications, and the various treatment modalities. This is the first textbook to combine the most up to date knowledge of both LPR and GERD meant for both specialties and the general medicine population. Completely unique to the reflux literature is a section detailing the substantial benefits of a mostly plant based, Mediterranean style diet in the treatment of reflux disease. Encouraging patients to read and learn about diet and health is likely the most important step in improving their disease. The text provides direction to the caregiver on how to transition to a mostly plant-based diet. Review of myths, effects of diet in the setting of other disease states, and dietary consequences are explained. Guidelines on how to transition diet, dining out while maintaining a plant-based diet, and how to wean off medication, such as PPI, are also provided. Global🌎Handwashing🧼Day CDC.gov: The COVID-19 pandemic provides an important reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy is also one of the simplest — handwashing with soap and water. Keeping hands clean can prevent 1 in 3 diarrheal illnesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu. Each year on October 15, Global Handwashing Day highlights the importance of handwashing with soap and water at home, in the community, and around the world. Global Handwashing serves as a yearly reminder that handwashing with soap and water is one of the best steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others

Pain, ringing, buzzing, pulsating, or hissing sensations in the ear? It’s common to think that earaches and ear pain happen only to children, but they are also common in adults. An earache may affect one or both ears. Ear pain may be dull, sharp, or burning, and it may feel constant or come and go. Pain in the ear can have multiple causes - Seeing your ENT physician is your first step in evaluation and treatment.
From all of us at ENT and Allergy Associates, we are incredibly thankful for all our patients and for the chance to make a positive impact in the lives of so many in all of our communities. We are thankful for the opportunity to do something that we can be proud of and appreciate the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives every day. Today, we are thankful for your trust. Chronic cough can be extremely debilitating. Chronic Cough is a cough lasting more than 2 months that does not resolve with rest or medication. A chronic cough usually has multiple causes. While it can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint the problem that's triggering a chronic cough, the most common causes are tobacco use, postnasal drip, asthma and acid reflux. Fortunately, chronic cough typically disappears once the underlying problem is treated. At The Voice and Swallowing Center, a division of ENT & Allergy Associates, LLP, is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of voice and swallowing disorders and to further the understanding of voice and swallowing through education. The faculty at the Voice & Swallowing Center has invented or pioneered a suite of office-based diagnosis & therapeutic procedures.

Hearing loss is often obvious but can progress insidiously over long periods of time. More subtle symptoms also include ear plugging and pressure, tinnitus and, most important, social isolation. Children with hearing loss need to be monitored and treated closely to ensure adequate speech and language development, as well as optimal academic performance. Depending on the severity and cause of hearing loss in your child, hearing aids, cochlear implants and a combination of speech therapy or assistive listening devices might be recommended forms of treatment. The close collaboration between our audiologists and ENT physicians allows us to recognize and treat problems more quickly and completely, and under one roof! Older children sometimes develop hearing loss that wasn't present before. Here are some things to look for if you think your toddler or preschool-age child might have hearing loss: •Has difficulty understanding what people are saying. •Speaks differently than other children her or his age. •Doesn't reply when you call his or her name. •Responds inappropriately to questions (misunderstands). •Turns up the TV volume incredibly high or sits very close to the TV to hear. •Has problems academically, especially if they weren't present before. •Has speech or language delays or problems articulating things. •Watches others in order to imitate their actions, at home or in school. •Complains of ear pain, earaches or noises. •Cannot understand over the phone or switches ears frequently while talking on the phone. •Says "what?" or "huh?" several times a day. •Watches a speaker's face very intently—many children's hearing loss escapes detection because they are very successful lip readers.

Attention all Parents - Did you know that February is Kids ENT Health Month? ENT and Allergy Associates and our pediatrician friends at Allied Physicians Group @alliedphysiciansgroup want our patients and families to be informed about ear, nose and throat issues and treatments because informed parents make better decisions about the health and well-being of their children. Ready for a Tonsillectomy with @drbooger Did you know that Tonsillectomies are one of the most common surgeries kids and teens get? A tonsillectomy is surgery to remove the tonsils. Tonsils are lumps of tissue on both sides of the back of the throat that help the immune system protect the body from infections. You can think of the tonsils as germ processing centers. Why Are Tonsillectomies Done? Kids usually have a tonsillectomy because: • Their tonsils are so big they block the airway and make it hard to breathe. Swollen tonsils can make it hard to breathe, especially during sleep. A child might snore and stop breathing for short periods while asleep when the tonsils get in the way. This is called obstructive sleep apnea. Apnea can make kids miss out on healthy, restful sleep, which can lead to learning, behavior, growth, and heart problems. • Their tonsils get infected often. A health care provider might recommend removing the tonsils if a child gets a lot of tonsil infections (called tonsillitis). Experts define "a lot" as when a doctor diagnoses a child with at least 7 infections a year, more than 5 infections a year for 2 years in a row, or three infections a year for 3 years. At ENT and Allergy Associates we treat the spectrum of common pediatric ENT problems! We always care for your kids like they’re our own!

Sleep Awareness Week 2021 begins right at the start of Daylight Saving Time, when a lot of us are feeling a little more tired than usual😴. The transition between DST and Standard Time is characterized by more morning darkness and evening light.
