Did you know that the brain can actually perceive when we ignore a craving and attempt to fulfill it with an “alternative”? Further concerning, every time we avoid the foods we desire or attempt to instead consume a “diet” snack, etc., we increase our likelihood of “losing control” around this food the next time we are subjected to it. This is both backed by research and evidenced in eating disorders. As Evelyn Tribole says, if you’re eating a rice cake with apple sauce and calling it “pie”...uh huh, your brain knows the difference.
A study conducted in 2011 gave participants milkshakes, all of the same flavor and containing the same amount of calories. One group was told that they were trying a “diet” shake however, while the other group was told it was a regular shake. Afterwards, participants’ Ghrelin levels were measured; the results astounding. In the group that was told they were consuming a generic shake, Ghrelin levels dropped as they normally would after eating. (Ghrelin regulates hunger & fullness, increasing when hungry and decreasing when full.) In the group that believed that they were consuming a diet shake, however, Ghrelin levels remained THE SAME. While the “diet”-framed group consumed the same exact nutritional content, their body responded as though they had not eaten at all since they perceived the drink as a diet item and not the real thing (Crum & Corbin, 2011).
Another study, involving granola bars, provided granola bars to 2 groups of participants, labeling them as “diet” granola bars to one group, while labeling them as “tasty” to the other. The 3rd group received nothing. Upon obtaining subjective data from participants following the experiment, the “diet”-framed group reported not only to be hungrier than the “tasty” group, but hungrier than the group that ate NOTHING AT ALL. That’s right, consuming a food they perceived as “diet” created such a void in the brain that these individuals were even hungrier than those that hadn’t eaten anything at all.
Attempting to trick our brains into “avoiding” our cravings is a never ending game. You might believe that you are doing yourself a favor by attempting to trick yourself into “resisting” your actual craving or the “real deal,” but your brain knows otherwise. It’s not willpower; it’s biology.
Key takeaway: Honor your cravings. Eat the cookie/ brownie/ whatever processed yumminess you want and consistently avoid. Your body, brain, AND sanity will thank you.👌🏼🍪🍰🍫🍩
