Janice Morrisette is a nurse manager at Lahey and a proud Latina. Her sense of leadership is deeply tied to her roots and upbringing. We're proud to have her lead at LHMC! "As a child growing up, I was absolutely fortunate to be surrounded by a strong Latino family, community and culture. I am the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who instilled in me a fierce sense of pride, passion and resilience that sees me through this journey we call life. And again, I find myself surrounded by a strong team of family and community here at LHMC who have a passion for patient care and who have shown a tremendous amount of resiliency during these difficult times. My culture has taught me this: what happens to one person happens to all. And when challenging times are upon us, we rally together to make it through." #LaheyHospital #LatinaAtLahey #Latinx #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth
Beth Israel Lahey Health September 22 at 4:13 PM · "We have just begun to make a difference, but there is more work to do, to ensure a healthier and more just world." - Anne Mosenthal, MD, FACS, Chief Academic Officer, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center #WomeninMedicineMonth
Karen Torres Valentin and her husband Carmelo Nieves travelled to the states after the devastating Hurricane Maria left them jobless in 2017. Speaking no English, they worked their ways up the ranks at Lahey, and now Karen works in the Cath lab and Carmelo in Endoscopy. Their story of perseverance is essential to the fabric of our LHMC mission and community. "Nos propusimos unas metas y era poder trabajar en lo que nos apasionaba ya que fui enfermera en Puerto Rico. Estamos mas que agradecidos de todas las personas nos dieron la mano para poder lograr nuestros sueños . Nos encanta lo que hacemos y le decimos a las demas personas que no se den por vencidas y logren sus sueños." "We always set goals for ourselves and it was to be able to work on what we were passionate about since I was a nurse in Puerto Rico. We are more than grateful to all the people who lent a helping hand so we could achieve our dreams. We love what we do and we tell other people not to give up and achieve their dreams." #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth #Latinx #LaheyHospital
Rob Goris is a bit of an anomaly. He is a male registered nurse and Latino. Both are heavily underrepresented in nursing. But he says his culture and upbringing play a major role in how he approaches work and life. "From my very first day at Lahey I felt an immense sense of privilege as a male RN. Not only that, but here I was: a Latino male nurse. My culture drives me not just in what I wear or eat but how I treat others. I was taught to show the same respect to the housekeeper as I do my immediate manager or a CEO. I never forget where I came from and what it took for me to get here. My representation in the health field is so important because of the sacrifice of those before me. My parents arrived to the United States in the 1980s and showed me that anything is achievable if you work hard for it. For the next generation I have this advice: Never just meet the standard in anything in life. Focus on your craft and BECOME the standard." Thank you, Rob, for sharing your story and words of encouragement! #HispanicHeritageMonth #YearOftheNurse #LaheyHospital

Beth Israel Lahey Health October 10 at 7:05 PM · "One of the lessons we healthcare workers learned during the pandemic is how to lean on each other. Traditionally, we have always focused on our patients' needs at the expense of our own and rightly so. During these difficult times, however, caring for ourselves and our colleagues has become just as important." -Edwin T. Ozawa, M.D. Ph.D. Department of Anesthesia Lahey Hospital & Medical Center #WorldMentalHealthDay

“I grew up on the beach and always wore sunscreen. But as a mom with three kids, I ended up lathering my kids way more than myself.” Farrah Keegan of Saugus, MA thought she saw a sunspot on her thigh at the end of March, early April. “I kept looking at it and looking at it and decided to call my PCP in May.” Farrah’s primary care physician referred her to Adam Wulkan, Director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology and Lahey Health Hub, part of @bethisraelaheyhealth. During a telehealth call, Dr. Wulkan urged the mother of three to come in to have a biopsy. “It was melanoma, but it had not progressed.” Thankfully, Dr. Wulkan was able to work with Farrah to schedule an appointment to excise the lesion within two weeks of their first in person visit. “Timing was everything, if she had waited too long, the cancer could have grown downward and spread to other parts of her body, including her brain,” says Wulkan. Catch more of Farrah's story on WCVB Channel 5 Boston tonight at 5PM. https://bit.ly/3nxyPN9

Who was #Onesimus? A slave from Boston who introduced inoculation to his slave owner, Cotton Mather. The information Onesimus shared with Mather would later prove extremely useful during a smallpox outbreak in Boston. During his talks with Onesimus, Mather learned that back in his African homeland (the exact location is unknown), he was injected with a small amount of smallpox and was later found to be immune to the disease. In the midst of a statewide vaccine rollout seeking to protect our communities from COVID-19, we're proud to share this #MedicalMoment in #BlackHistory.
