A Week of Easy 5-Ingredient Dinners
Flashback Friday! Have been on the westside of Colorado Springs, and wondered what's the tall smoke stack doing there? Well I have your answer!
It's the smelter stack from the Golden Cycle Mill. It processed the ore coming down from Cripple creek on the trains. At one time it was the largest single producing gold mill in the US. It was closed around 1949 after almost 40 years of operation. No haunted tunnels. It was the concrete structure that the mill was built upon. Kinda like a basement or lower level. After the war effort the railroad was also closed and the train rails were removed and recycled. The tailings from the mill built up what is known as Mill Hill. The soil is contaminated with poisonous heavy metals that were used coagulate the gold dust in the process of extraction. The contamination is massive. The site was denied Federal clean up money as the years went by. It was too large of a single project to qualify for Federal monies. So there the smokestack sits as a reminder of the mill. Fountain Creek was also contaminated as the waste water from the mill and years of runoff flowed into the creek. Amazing history behind that site.

When this photo was taken in 1885, the population of Colorado Springs was ~7,000-8,000 and the 1st Antlers Hotel was just a two-year old toddler. If you look closely west down Pikes Peak Avenue in the left-center of the image, you can make out the Antlers, in its original trim, at the far end.
