A quick update on the Screech Owl... 2 weeks after surgery and the fracture seems to be healing well. Hopefully he will get to join his crew soon... Great job Dr. Duvall!
It’s not easy having hemipenes…. Elliott, a 5 ½ month old veiled chameleon, came in for us to assess some pink tissue that was protruding from his vent. On examination it was a hemipene that had become impacted and inflamed. When we tried to replace it the other one would pop out too! Elliott was admitted to the hospital and given fluids, pain medication, and an antibiotic injection. The next day he had surgery to amputate both hemipenes. He was under anesthesia and had local anesthetics. The hemipenes came off easily using radiosurgery and Elliott recovered well! Elliott has been doing great at home and will be visiting us for a progress exam next week. For more information on hemipenes, prolapses, and their treatment check out our blog: http://www.birdsandexotics.com/2020/09/chameleon-prolapsed-hemipenes-case-study/ #reptiles #chameleon #veterinarian #exoticanimal #veterinarysurgery #exoticvetcare #chameleonsofinstagram #exoticpets #exoticpet #reptile #reptiles #exoticpet

Why did the chicken cross the road? To come to Exotic Vet Care to get her wing looked at! This young chicky got attacked by a dog and after a few days the owner realized that her wing was not looking great. We provided supportive care with fluids, antibiotics, and pain management. Due to the severity of the injury, removing the devitalized wing to save her life was the only option. She underwent surgery and did very well. Moral of the story: pets are pets and is our duty to keep them supervised at all times...
This little Eastern Screech Owl came to us from the Center for Birds of Prey with a wing fracture. Our skillfull Dr. Duvall did a wonderful repair to get this little one back to the wild in ~ 6-8 weeks. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Just a quick update on our juvenile Night Heron. Seems to be doing well so far and his fracture is healing. Hopefully it will be back to catching some critters at night... Fingers crossed!

In excellent news for our wildlife, a new law protecting South Carolina's native reptiles and amphibians has been passed, and it may affect some our clients. The new law limits the number of native turtles that an individual may possess to no more than 10 total (with individual limits of 5 on many common species and 2 on Eastern box turtles and diamondback terrapins). Never fear, however, residents of the state who currently have collections in excess of these limits will be given an opportunity to register with SCDNR (within 90 days) and receive a temporary permit “grandfathering” their current animals. We're not afraid of a bird on our head, but we are afraid of running out of newspaper (or as we call it, newsPOOPER). If you're done reading it, we can definitely use it. Please bring papers (we only use the black-and-white pages, but we'll sort it out) to our clinic during office hours and help us keep our boarders clean and happy! You can leave the papers outside our door without contact or call us inside and we will send someone out to fetch them from your vehicle. We and our boarders appreciate it very much!
As an independent clinic without corporate advertising and backing, your positive reviews are vital to spreading the word about our business. Help us save lives! Your feedback is always welcome, and we are here for you and your pets. Please feel free to address any questions, concerns, or recommendations to Practice Manager Kerry Bateman. We are always working to serve you better, including extended office hours starting next month and more enhancements coming in the new year! You are why we do what we do, and we thank you for your support. G.PAGE Exotic Vet Care would love your feedback

Albino and leucistic animals are very rare. Dr. Rainwater's wildlife biologist husband recently had a paper published about some leucistic alligators discovered right here in South Carolina. Everyone here at Exotic Vet Care loves our reptile friends that come to visit and they are very popular pets! Bearded Dragons, snakes, geckos, we see them all! However did you know these scaly babies also carry a disease called Salmonella? It can make people mildly sick but thankfully if you follow these simple guidelines, you can help keep both your family and pets safe and healthy. https://arav.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/ARAV_2018_trifold_samonella-brochure_11.2_PROOF12.pdf

Things are wild at Exotic Vet Care! Dr. Biascoechea is prepping this bald eagle for surgery, and Dr. Duvall is giving this alligator a wellness exam! Both belong to organizations, and are not personal pets. We are grateful for the Center for Birds of Prey and Old Santee Canal Park, who work to preserve our wildlife and educate our citizens. For us, it's just another day at work :)
