Sadly, we lost another one to cancer, the great Eddie Van Halen... This was one of my faves to teach along with Atomic Punk both of which demonstrated his incredible “Funk Factor” and I had no idea of how funky he could be until I wrote this one out for one of my students many years ago. Rock and Funk on, Sir Eddie... RIP
Subject: Timbre (Some ways of changing the timbre or tone color on a repeat of any song that you may play...)
And here’s Lukemeister playing his first Soleares for time trials: Proud of his conscientious musical concentration!
I absolutely love performing as a warmup act for my fab students! Play on, Dallasman!
One of my fave students practicing her tremolos for Malagueña! Keep practicing, dearest!
The “How To” of the Flamenco Forward Roll technique using the “Full Plant” with fingers p, i, m, and a. Enjoy!
This young man (Dallasman) and several others will be joining me to play some music at the fab Autumn Artwalk at the Kieran/Sistrunk Fine Art Studio 2120 Washington Ave. on Saturday October 24th 10-1 pm! Come out for some hip and sophisticated guitar music and the best in local Art!
Well this is most Cool and Hip; I get to be the "warmup act" for my Superlative Students!!!! Peace, Love and Guitars!!!
So cool to hang out while my students played yesterday at the Waco’s Autumn Artwalk! Peace, Love and Guitars!!!!!
Megan Teague hitting it up “live” at the Woodway studio location!
Such a blessing to continue teaching during this Covid thing! Of course I learn as much from my students as they do me! Before exhibition there must be much repetition... We’ll Rock on, then!
Come out if you get a chance! Guitar lovers unite! Peace Love and Guiars!!!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all my great students as I ride on this hipster bike courtesy of my grandson! Peace, Love and Guitars!!!!!!!!!!
Classic Carol which introduces the guitarist to the use of a middle voice surrounded by Bach style counterpoint...
A great intro to counterpoint in a rather easy Christmastime carol featuring a Welsh melody from the 1500s
A nice one page carol in which timbre contrast should be utilized. This and other considerations are explained in the video...
O Christmas Tree: another great and easy arrangement for my super students!
Ok, Here’s the next Christmas Carol for those of you playing this one! Try to really accent the melody on this one and play it several times in case your loved ones desire to sing ‘round the 🎄 Christmas tree or whatever you may have! Fingerings are on the sheet music posted below. Enjoy!
Just recorded this one for Waco’s music and Arts Ambassador Bruce Huff and is a great lesson in the forward roll combined with the reverse roll found in the B section...
Phrasing plays a big role here so add as much “punctuation” as you can.
Thanks so very very much for your kind likes! More instructional Christmas Carols coming soon on my next teaching break. Peace, Love and Guitars!!!
Ok, students, it is nigh on Wedding time! Those of you wishing to play an easy song at a family wedding event, well here it is! We will go over it later during lesson time in terms of the right hand as well as phrasing considerations. Enjoy!!
One might assume that all recording processes are without incident. That is the lesson in this classic Carol I put on my solo gtr page. Funnily enough, starting at 1:57 the car door slams and our pooches hear Mom coming in! To play this one don’t forget to tune the sixth string down to D! Easy to forget this little detail, lol! Happy New Years!!
Thanks for all the kind likes on this page (I had briefly forgotten it existed) and my solo guitar page! Now, in order for me to keep up with my dear students: practice...
Another great wedding song that has paid for itself hundreds of times over! Students, when you play this it too will be one of the happiest times of your life and in turn you will raise the stature of La Guitarra to the highest pinnacle! Keep practicing and sheet music is down below. iPhone videography by Terry Exum
How to add more chords to fill out the harmonic intent in comping as well as improvising is an art form unto inself. Here the a minor chord can be made to sound more sophisticated by adding a b min 7 or the more diatonic b half diminished 7 along with the c maj 7. Enjoy the volume swells at the end, lol! video courtesy of the Venus Envy band
Happy New Years from Terry and I! Let’s make 2021 even better for the Guitar!!
One of my favorite pop tunes to teach by the inimitable John and Paul that we will be looking at today; Yes, I teach a few victims, er, students on Sundays. Ironically, someone on the Book of Faces said they saw me playing in the snow up on the hill today! What did you call me?! Lol
My addendum to the great Tremelo section of Ernesto Lecuona’s Malagueña provided as a splendid edition by my old and great teacher, Michael Daily! I merely added some higher melodic notes beginning in measure seven in which the lower string features the higher notes: A very “Tarregaesque” technique. I will play this excerpt along with a detailed video of the Tremelo technique as soon as my broken nail grows out and can be reshaped. I know: Details, details, details, 😆 Lol! Enjoy, my students!!
Super fun playing and teaching down in South Texas this weekend! Great times with the fam! And keep practicing my dear students and see and hear you play soon!
One of my favorite effects of the Guitar, at least when I play it with “warmed up” hands, lol! So warm up your hands with this great technique and be able to play the great pieces like Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Un Sueno and many others, dear students! Enjoy!
The essence of the forward roll with P,I and M is the exact motion as prescribed by the great teacher/composer Mauro Giuliani in his right hand study no. 2! Utilize this great exercise as a precursor to playing the great piano piece Asturias (Leyenda). I still practice this and the other 119 “Giuliani right handlers” as I have for decades. Enjoy!
Thank you so very much for your kind likes! More instructional videos coming soon; Please let me know of your favorite guitar piece for the solo guitar and I will gladly play it with an explanation if the techniques involved! Peace, Love and Guitars! ! !
Yes, teachers must practice too! Thank you dear friends and students of the Guitar for your ever so kind Likes! More instructional videos coming soon! Now, Bach to practicing.....
Students of the Studio will be performing their Classical pieces at this really hip blend of Art and Music at Waco’s Artwalk located at the famed Kieran/Sistrunk Fine Art Gallery! Please come out and support your guitarristic comrades! I’ll be performing the usual Spanish guitar favorites as well.
Born today in 1893, Andres Segovia made it possible for our beloved instrument to be taught in the most prestigious Universities as a solo instrument on the same level of the Cello, Violin and Pianoforte. My teacher, maestro Michael Daily studied privately in Spain with Maestro Segovia in the late seventies and early eighties. Keep practicing and even more importantly, listening... It is what He did.
Most excellent and honored I am to have the studio’s monicker on these delightful tees! Thanks to the grand Group W Bench Litter Patrol and the inimitable Bruce Huff for having us included as a super sponsor! Now where do your old guitar strings go? Either your rod and reel or recycling would be the best answers to this quintessential query! !
Ok students! Please don’t forget to tune up with you guitar tuna so that we can proceed with our session in haste! And you will sound at least as good as I!
Had the ultimate pleasure in celebrating a great Waco Ambassador of Arts and Music yesterday for her Birthday. I made her a brief video and did a “Mashup” of three pieces that she really liked. So, my students; When one considers the most amount of gigabytes our telephones can really handle it’s really not much, right?! So try to segue to the next song or piece after one or two phrases. In doing so, you satisfy your audience with a little “taste” of each! Admittedly, my playing was a bit off and not worthy of her ears, or yours for that matter, lol, but one is still left somewhat satiated... Malagueña, Recuerdos de la Alhambra and Green sleeves. Rock on, dear students and back to practicing!
Super photo, ladies! Terry Exum (on the left) has been my student for many years and will be performing her classical renditions of Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Villa Lobos, Torroba, Tarrega and many others soon at an event near you! Our great friend Gina Lowe Deramee plays a bit as well as does her husband, Steve Deramee. Gals with Guitars; What could be better?!
Great Guitar news; Due to my getting the Phizer vaccine 💉 (first dose) I will be resuming In Person teaching at both locations in Waco and Woodway in mid April! So get with me you great and patient students of mine for scheduling our first private lessons together: What a great thing and how I miss all of you! Peace, Love and Guitars! !
