Dr. Rowell Retires
Message from Dr. Rowell:
Thirty-five years ago, I returned to Salem joining my father, Peter P. Rowell, MD, in the practice of ophthalmology. What I didn’t know then was the great joy I would experience from the numerous patient and family relationships formed over the decades while providing medical and vision care in our community at Eye Care Physicians & Surgeons.
My original plan to retire in July, 2020 came sooner than expected with the the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity to say goodbye to many long-time patients and friends. Yet, while I am stepping away from my professional career, I am looking forward to this next phase in my life, and can honestly say I will be enjoying every minute of it.
I want to thank all of my patients for placing your trust in me over the past thirty-five years. To my amazing medical associates and professional staff, past and present, I want to thank you for your support and teamwork. It has been my honor to work with each and every one of you, and it has been your friendship and loyalty that has made such a wonderful and fulfilling medical career in Salem possible.
Sincerely,
David P. Rowell, MD
Good news! EyeCare will open on Monday, May 4 for routine care and appointments. This also means Optic’49 will be open. For those that have upcoming scheduled appointments, you will receive a phone call from us to make sure you’re healthy and what to expect on your visit. All EyeCare and Optic’49 staff will be wearing masks. We’d like you to wear one too. Our facilities will be thoroughly cleaned and ready for public access, and we will also be limiting the number of patients inside each clinic at any one time. That means if you have a family member, friend, or caregiver with you, they will be asked to wait outside, or remain in their car, unless they provide needed assistance. We will be open from 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. This includes walk-ins customer times for Optic’49. All of us at EyeCare Physicians & Surgeons and Optic’49 want to make sure we’re all being cautious, safe, smart, and healthy in our interactions. We want this to work for everyone, and we’re looking forward to seeing you soon!
A helpful tip from our friends at Optic'49!

If you are having issues with foggy glasses while wearing a mask, folding a tissue and placing it on the bridge of your nose and underneath your mask helps reduce condensation as the tissue will absorb the moisture from your breath.
Soap and water may also do the trick. According to a recent study, doctors who washed their glasses with soapy water, without rinsing, and let them air dry prior to wearing a face mask experienced reduced fogging.
The soapy water leaves behind a thin surfactant film that reduces surface tension and causes the water molecules to spread out evenly on this transparent layer. This “surfactant effect” is widely utilized to prevent misting of surfaces in everyday situations.
Tips from the CDC — Wearing Your Face Mask Correctly:
• Cover mouth and nose with no gaps between your face and the mask
• Fit snugly but comfortably against the sides of your face
• Be secured with ties or ear loops
• Allows for breathing without restriction
• Can be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape
• Remove mask from behind pulling on ear loops or ties (do not touch the front of mask).
Also, be careful not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth when removing your face covering and wash your hands immediately after removing it.
