Time is of the essence after DUI arrest
No one really prepares for a DUI arrest. That makes it difficult to understand where you should focus your attention after your arrest. First-time offenders may not realize that the case is not closed after taking a breathalyzer or blood test to determine your blood alcohol content.
Regardless of the test you choose to take, your arresting officer will serve you with an Officer’s Affidavit and Notice of Revocation/Disqualification form. This is official notice that you now have 30 days until you lose your driving privileges.
You can do something about it
You shouldn’t fret right away because you still have the right to contest the revocation. However, you need to take immediate action because the law only gives you 15 days to request a hearing to contest the revocation.
That’s why it’s important to remain calm after your arrest and blood alcohol content testing. Waiting too long to act could cost you your driving privileges for six months. You need to be proactive within that 15-day window state law provides for you to protect your driver’s license.
Should you lose your license, you will also have to pay $315 to reinstate your license and another $50 if you’re required to have an ignition interlock device installed on your vehicle. A few hundred dollars may not seem like much, but DUIs are expensive and saving any money at all along the way is helpful.
Your license affects more than just you
Do you have children or family members who depend on you for transportation? Are there activities that you’re able to enjoy because of your driver’s license? Remember these things if you receive a notice of revocation because two weeks can go by quickly.
