Meet our new Assistant Manager, Katie Tomney! Check out her thoughts on becoming a new Fairfax Pilates Team Member! 1.) What do you bring to Fairfax Pilates? I am really great about making every client feel “heard” and understood! I want clients to feel like their goals and needs are being met both in and around the studio and as such I strive to make myself available to our clients so that I can ensure that each client is reaching 150% satisfaction with our studio. In addition to these practices, my training in dance and anatomical sciences ensures that I offer clear and concise directions in classes that help keep our clients strong and safe! 2.) What about being a Fairfax Pilates team member are you most excited about? I am most excited for the opportunity to learn something new from my fellow co-workers! Every new job opportunity offers a chance for growth and professional development. I can’t wait to learn and be inspired by my team members! 3.) What is your training philosophy? If you aren’t having fun, then why waste your time!?!? Life is too short to not enjoy the work you are doing and as such I employ this belief into all of my practices. Even when the work gets hard, there is joy to be had in the push and I encourage every client I interact with to apply this same positive outlook into their practices! 4.) What experience do you have in the industry? Dancing since the age of three, I have held a love for physical activity for practically my entire life! I hold my Bachelors of Dance from the SUNY University at Buffalo where in addition to my dance practices, I also had the opportunity to lead the university in major management roles including organizing our University’s participation in the American College Dance Association’s regional conferences for two years in a row. In addition to my dance training, I am a certified Barre Instructor and have held teaching experience for 5+ years with students aged Early Childhood all the way through to my adult clients. 5.) Fun Fact 🙂 I am a champion level Irish Dancer! I even competed in the World Championships where my team placed top 10 worldwide! #fairfaxpilates #strong
Tasty Tuesdays With Terri! Glowing Carrot Ginger Turmeric Soup with Coconut Milk is light, luscious, earthy and flavorful! Fresh turmeric root gives it a hint of the exotic flavor! You can use carrot juice for part of the base to make it doubly carrot-y … which is optional, but adds even more carrot flavor. Turmeric has many health benefits as an anti-inflammatory, immune booster, digestion enhancer, and detoxifier. Usher in the fall with this colorful and hearty soup! Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 20 mins Total Time: 35 minutes Yield: 6 cups ( 4 servings) Ingredients: 1 tablespoon coconut oil (or vegetable oil, olive oil) ½ cup chopped shallot (approximately 2 shallots, or ½ an onion) 2 tablespoons chopped, peeled turmeric (see notes) 2 tablespoon chopped, peeled ginger root 4 garlic cloves, rough chopped 1 pint fresh carrot juice (2 cups– ok to use store bought) or use 2 cups veggie or chicken stock. 2 cups water 1 lb chopped carrots ½ teaspoon salt, then more to taste ¾ – 1 15oz can of coconut milk, saving some for swirling if you want. 1 teaspoon curry powder ½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar, or lime juice ½ teaspoon soy sauce ( or Braggs liquid amino ) – this is optional, added for depth. 1 teaspoon maple syrup Pinch or two cayenne, to taste garnish with mint, cilantro or edible flowers Instructions: Peel and chop shallots, turmeric, ginger and garlic. Chop the carrots into ½ inch rings, no need to peel if scrubbed. Heat oil in a large pot, over medium heat. Add shallots, turmeric root and ginger and sauté until golden, about 3-4 minutes. (see notes if using ground turmeric) Add garlic and continue cooking, stirring about 2 minutes. Add carrot juice, water and carrots and salt. Bring to a boil, cover, turn heat down and simmer until carrots are tender, 15-20 minutes. Let it cool a bit, then blend in batches until very smooth and velvety. Place the soup back in a pot, over low heat and add coconut milk and curry, vinegar, soy, and maple. Simmer and stir until coconut milk is combined. Taste, adjust salt. Add cayenne for a little heat. Serve with fresh herbs and coconut milk swirls. Notes: If subbing ground turmeric add it when you add the curry powder. It is much more intense in flavor than the fresh root, so start with one teaspoon, adding more to taste.

Start your week off right with Fairfax Pilates! Citrus Avocado Salad 🥗 🍊 Description: Citrus and Avocado Salad with cilantro, jalapeño, lime, and optional chili flakes. Vegan, refreshing and a healthy boost of Vitamin C for the immune system as we prepare for the cold weather season! Use blood oranges when in season, for added color! 🍊 Serving Size: 2 Large Bowls Ingredients: * 1 blood orange (or sub navel, or other orange citrus) * 1 navel orange * 1 ripe avocado * 1 lime * 1 tablespoon cilantro leaves * 1 jalapeño thinly sliced- optional * salt to taste * Chili flakes Instructions: 1. Peel and cut oranges into bite-sized pieces and place in a medium bowl. 2. Cut avocado into bite-sized pieces and place in the bowl. 4. Add optional cilantro and sliced jalapeño. 5. Sprinkle with salt and chili flakes. Squeeze with ½ a lime. Gently toss, being careful not to over mix. 6. Taste, adjusting salt, lime, chili. 8. Depending on how sweet or tart your oranges are, you may need more or less lime juice. Blood oranges can often be pretty tart, so start light! 9. NUTRITION SPOTLIGHT from our nutritionist Terri Johnson! A paleo diet is a dietary plan based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. The aim of a paleo diet is to return to a way of eating that's more like what early humans ate. The diet's reasoning is that the human body is genetically mismatched to the modern diet that emerged with farming practices — an idea known as the discordance hypothesis. Farming changed what people ate and established dairy, grains and legumes as additional staples in the human diet. This relatively late and rapid change in diet, according to the hypothesis, outpaced the body's ability to adapt. This mismatch is believed to be a contributing factor to the prevalence of obesity, diabetes and heart disease today.
Good Morning from Fairfax Pilates! Start your day with some gentle stretches to eliminate aches and pains. 1. Stand next to a wall and raise your arm behind you until it is shoulder height. Breath into your shoulder, relax, and hold for at least 30 seconds on each side. 2. This hand stretch can be done anywhere! It's a great one if you write or type a lot. Hold your arm out straight with your palm to the ceiling. Hold your fingers with your opposite hand and gently pull down. You can also pull down on each finger individually to get a different stretch.
