Each family has its own story. No family is exactly like any other family. We are all sometimes a source of enjoyment and also sometimes a pain in the neck. Every one of us. A family can become the greatest source of stress and sorrow, or the source of unbounded joy. Nevertheless, it is the main event in life, and certainly worth protecting. When necessary, look for a counselor who is genuine, has at least 10,000 hours of clinical experience, is respectful of you, and knows when you need information, empathy, guidance, and yes, sometimes even straight talk.
Over the past thirty years I have logged between 30 and 90 clock hours of continuing education each year in areas relating to family psychology, forensic psychology, family systems medicine, sexuality and sex therapy, sexual trauma and recovery, addictions, and psychopharmacology. In 2000 and 2001 I completed a certification program in addictions training at the Meadows Institute in Phoenix, AZ. In 1991 I completed a four-year program of advanced study in the Bowen Family Systems Theory with the Minnesota Institute for Family Dynamics, which met four times each year in Minneapolis for a total of 120 hours annually. Faculty members have included the late Murray Bowen, M.D., Michael Kerr, M.D., Dan Papero, Ph.D., and Mary Bourne, MSW. During the summers of 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997 I was director of programs of study in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. In the summer of 1995, 1996, and 1997 I taught graduate courses at the Center entitled “Family Psychology, Language, and Culture”.
