In its 37th year, the Mayor’s Medal of Honor recognizes Rochester residents who have gone above and beyond to serve the community. The Human Services Award recognizes persons who have “demonstrated a compassionate and a caring spirit by providing humanitarian services” and “provided notable assistance to others of the community in need.” Kelli led a community effort to collect and distribute non-food essentials to at risk families. April led several food support initiatives for seniors, at-risk homeless, families, and persons in quarantine. Working with public and private partners and volunteers, they provided vital and safe support to our community. All this, we would add, while ensuring the continuity of the FSR family stability and senior independence services they oversee in a time of increasing demand and urgency. We could not be more proud of our colleagues or more pleased at this recognition of the compassion and professional excellence that we already know so well. Congratulations Kelli and April!

Thanks to Old Abe and Young Abe for their years and generations of service. Old Abe Coffee Co. Old Abe Coffee Co. January 20 at 4:28 AM · MLK Day has been designated the “day of service”. Awesome. You can do a “season of service” through Family Service Rochester by volunteering to remove snow for those who can’t do it themselves. Or, like us. make it a lesson of labor for your kid. FSR frequently has needs in your area, so you might get to help out a neighbor you never met or who you never even knew needed help. We took Young Abe to do this job two blocks from us. He loved it. We gave him a fat cupcake afterward. Email jloeffler@familyservicerochester.org to add your name.

Life can get hectic with work, family needs, and quality and not so quality time together. It is easy to ignore the body indicators of stress – a tense neck, poor sleep, and feeling irritable to name a few. Take time to focus on the way your body feels. If you are noticing physical signs of stress, try to find healthy ways to start, renew, or maintain habits that help you take care of yourself. Remember, caring for yourself is not selfish – it can help you handle life stressors, support your relationships, and maintain your mental well-being. The COVID-19 Wellness Pocket Guide provides tips and ideas for taking care of yourself and your family. #StayConnectedMN https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/hcp/mhpocket.pdf

Tonja Ziemann, Senior Independence Program assistant for Family Service Rochester, which operates the Meals on Wheels program for Rochester and Stewartville, said when COVID-19 hit, people in the community saw the need and stepped up. Plus, with some people working from home or working less, they volunteered to drive for Meals on Wheels. "More people came forward during the crisis to drive for us," Ziemann said. "But we always need drivers or substitute drivers." Ziemann said for a while FSR's Meals on Wheels increased because they were supplying food to temporary homeless shelters two times a day up to January. Still, even without those clients, the program has seen an increase. For example, in February 2020, FSR served less than 100 customers in Rochester. Now that number is closer to 135.
