Mitch Duszynski, (center) and Ron Cramer (right) from the Urbana Masonic Lodge 157 present checks to Julie Schubach, our Senior Resource Center Director, in support of our HomeCare, Meals on Wheels and Senior Transportation programs. As Lodge officers they help manage the Ruth Hayward Masonic Fund established from the Ruthy Hayward estate to assist the elderly in Champaign County. Thank you! We're so grateful for your loyal commitment to local seniors.
Mayor Feinen has officially declared Friday, September 25, 2020 as Dick Ziegler Day to honor one of our community's retired professors and volunteer extraordinaire. Dick is one of our fantastic RSVP volunteers who's delivered countless meals for Meals on Wheels and spent years assisting seniors with their taxes through Tax-Aide. He's also served on the Courage Connection Board of Directors. Here he is receiving an RSVP Service Award in 2015 (left) with Tom Austin another great volunteer.
Congratulations Dick; it's your day and we sending hearts full of best wishes your way!
There's still time to make sure all older adults get counted! Caseworkers are available in Champaign and Douglas County if you need assistance. #2020Census

October is Depression Awareness Month. With the COVID-19 pandemic compelling older adults to shelter at home, even those who are not normally bothered by decreased mood may find themselves feeling down these days. Program to Encourage Active, Rewarding Lives (PEARLS) has been a very useful program to help older adults through COVID and many other life challenges. Consider PEARLS if you or someone you know has been feeling down.
The program is designed to teach problem solving skills and encourage activities (within safe guidelines) that are pleasant, social, and physical. By learning the skills to break problems into small, achievable goals individuals can regain their sense of control over their lives. And by reconnecting to activities they enjoy, they can break the cycle of feeling bad and doing less.
Let our trained PEARLS Counselors help! Call the Senior Resource Center at 217-352-5100 to learn more.
RSVP is a program of the Corporation of National Community Service, Senior Corps. They are rebranding our program to make us more visible.

A happy woman in Douglas County brought in the last flower from her garden to share with Becki our caseworker. This senior was so grateful for the help she'd received.
Which is a beautiful way to remind everyone 65 and older that our caseworkers are taking appointments to help you learn about all the Medicare Plan options and how they compare in both cost and coverage. The service is free, we have folders of information to share with you. Family Service is a private non-profit, so we're not affiliated with any insurance company and there's no pressure or marketing. Call 217-352-5100 to schedule an appointment.
Enrollment begins October 15, so plan early and call today!
Medicare Open Enrollment is just around the corner. All Medicare beneficiaries should evaluate their plan options annually. Caseworkers are available in Champaign and Douglas Counties to assist! Thank you to so many of you for making the holidays merry for local seniors! Our caseworkers are making deliveries in bags decorated by a caseworker's daughter. You're the best Champaign County!
Family Service RSVP has had a volunteer appreciation luncheon every year for the past 47 years. The Covid is the only thing that has kept us down. Since we were unable to celebrate this past October, we are handing out our two special awards to Debbie Isham and Jo Church right here in our new office. Debbie was awarded our Rena Lenz award for outstanding first-year volunteer. Jo was awarded the Vicky Stewart award for someone who kept volunteering even through diversity. Our station of the year award is going to Faith In Action (OSF) and Carle Hospice. These two stations have forged through Covid like champs and we want to recognize them for all they do for our community. Our Senior Connection will be in your mailbox soon with more information about volunteer celebrities.
One of our Family Service RSVP volunteers is making 200 of these darling sacks for our Holiday Food For Seniors delivery. Linda is the best! Plus, RSVP volunteer, Joyce, has kindly volunteered to write in 200 Holiday Cards that will be added to the delivery next week also, along with over 200 masks made by RSVP volunteers Debbie and Janet. Where there is a will, there is a way, and RSVP has the will.

Thanksgiving food delivery. Our Family Service RSVP volunteers sacked and delivered groceries to 195 low-income seniors today. Not even a pandemic can keep our volunteers down. We all wore masks and gloves and respected the 6 foot distancing rule. Thank you to everyone for your help!
